I’m a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl’s Pet (Volume 3) – Cat-astrophe Strikes!

What happened?

Upon entering the dungeon, Aria’s party comes up against a pack of War Wolves. They are usually solitary monsters but must have been forced together by a demon. Regardless, they make quick work of them with Tama showing off a water element attack that surprises everyone, the demon included. He decides that he will have to face them himself along with his most powerful monsters. Beryl Astaroth introduces himself to the adventurers and then tells them that he is the only surviving member of the clan of demons who lived in this location before Ragnarok. As such, he wants revenge on the humans and will begin by destroying them. Six trolls emerge from the cave behind him, forcing the adventurers to split up, which is exactly what Beryl wanted them to do. He put up protective barriers, ensuring that his trolls have enough targets.

To his surprise, Cedric is able to use dark elemental magic and quickly kills the two trolls trapped with him and his party. Tama is stuck with four trolls or are they stuck with him? He fires off attack after attack and soon wears them down. In fact, the barriers worked against them as there was nowhere for them to run once Tama started going. That just left Vulcan and Aria who had been trapped with Beryl. He planned on killing them and then escaping before the others could get to him. However, Vulcan and Aria had other ideas. Vulcan created a smokescreen with her hammer and then Aria dashed in and drove her blades into his chest. However, she was caught by one of his blades in the process and he had coated them with a deadly poison. To make a cure, they needed the eye of an Earth Dragon. Tama realised that he knew where to find one and fought through his fears to confront it. Last time it almost killed him, but this time would be different!

What did you think?

This volume has a lot more action than the previous two put together which ended up being a lot of fun. It’s always fun seeing Tama obliterate his opponents, but it was also nice to see that the others aren’t a pushover too. Aria killing the demon shows just how far she has come, even if he did catch her with a sneaky attack as he died. Of course, that gave Tama a chance to save his master once more and while no one was sure how the corpse of an Earth Dragon appeared outside the room where they were treating Aria, she knew that it was Tama.

This volume also revisited several of the events that we’ve already seen but from a different perspective. We saw the day that Aria found Tama from her point of view along with a bit of lead-up and another flashback that showed us why she is so keen on cats. I’ll admit that I’m not a huge fan of seeing the same scene again from a different character’s viewpoint, especially when we’re only three books into the series, but it did give some more context to things and also set up a fascinating situation. More on that in a moment. Anyhow, this series is a blast. It manages to mix some good action with some fairly chilled moments, and then there’s always a bath scene or two…

What was your highlight?

So, we saw Tama return to fight the Earth Dragon to save Aria. He needed its remaining eye and was ready to kill it to save his master. He had grown a lot since they last fought, but it still wasn’t enough. That was when he decided to activate his evolution status and ensure his victory even if it meant he could never go back to Aria. Luckily, his body returned to the small cub-like size that everyone was used to and with his unlimited storage, he was able to bring the entire Earth Dragon corpse with him.

Then, we saw the same thing but from the Earth Dragon’s point of view. I was reading it and wondering exactly why we needed to get more information about an event when there seemed to be little point to it. That was when things got interesting. After the Earth Dragon died in the battle against Tama, it was reincarnated into the body of a busty monster girl. I wasn’t entirely sure what species it had become, but it looked like it could have been a goblin girl since there were goblins nearby, but it could have been anything. Anyhow, she wants to mate with Tama too and create an even stronger offspring. Tama is in demand. This could get very messy!
