I’m a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl’s Pet (Volume 1) – You’ve Got to be Kitten Me!

What happened?

The elf-girl found him in the labyrinth, injured and dying. He assumed that she would kill him once she worked out what he was, but to his surprise again, he woke up in her bed. She had cared for him and nursed him back to health. As a former knight, he swore to protect her and stay by her side through thick and thin. Of course, being carried around in her cleavage was a significant perk, but that didn’t factor into his thinking. In fact, that just gave him the perfect place to watch for those who sought to do ill to his master, Aria. His biggest problem was making sure that no one worked out that he was a Behemoth. After following Aria into the labyrinth, Tama (the Behemoth cub) was forced to use magic to save her. Instead of scaring her off, she decided to make him a part of her party for real since he was an Elemental Cat…

As Aria registered Tama at the guild, Anna, the muscly guild receptionist warned Aria that Elemental Cats grow to be two metres in length and will mate with any species once they’re old enough. Aria knew this and was actually counting on that fact… Anyhow, a local noble had taken a shine to Aria and was determined to make her his, especially after Tama bit his hand the last time they met. He had an order to exterminate Tama but was willing to spare him if they could defeat him in a duel. If she lost, Tama would be executed and she would become his wife. Tama was not about to sit back and let this happen. However, since everyone believed he was an Elemental Cat, he could only use elemental magic, which limited his attacks. Just when things were looking dire, Tama was forced to use another move and win the fight. Luckily, everyone just assumed it was an inane ability that Tama possessed. If only they knew the truth!

What did you think?

After the first couple of chapters, I was getting into this series. It reminded me a little of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime when Rimuru was wandering around the dungeon eating monsters, gaining skills and getting stronger, as that was pretty much what Tama was doing. He even came face to face with an Earth Dragon and only just managed to escape with his life. That was when Aria found him. This too seemed like a good thing because Aria is hot as hell and also incredibly capable as a fighter, be it a low-ranking one at this stage. Then, this series turned into the fantasy cat version of My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog when Aria revealed that she was counting on Tama growing up and being her first time…

Now, I can’t say I was expecting that turn of events. Everything up to that had been fairly harmless and good-natured, so this revelation stopped me in my tracks. I had to reread the page a couple of times before it sank in. Now, I don’t think we’re ever going to get to the point where anything comes of this, but there is a short story at the end of the volume where Aria takes Tama to the bathhouse and basically uses him as a sponge to clean particular areas of her body. Poor Tama… Anyhow, that aside, I’m curious to see how this series develops as I’m hoping that Aria meets someone who relegates Tama to simply being a protective cat. We shall see!

What was your highlight?

So, the noble who wanted to kill Tama and make Aria his wife was called Kussman and he was a massive jerk. To be fair, Aria got a lot of unwanted attention and stares from just about everyone which was a little disturbing, but I think it’s good that this series made a point of showing just how unrelenting it is. I don’t know if Tama is going to be able to make everyone pay for their indiscretions but I think it’s interesting that an ecchi series has made the effort to show this sort of thing. Anyhow, Kussman is a jerk. He believed that he would defeat them easily, win Aria’s hand and exterminate Tama because he had a ring that nullified magic attacks.

Of course, Tama has many more tricks up his sleeve and despite not wanting to use them was left with no choice. He let out an Aether Howl. Kussman went flying against a wall and then slumped to the ground, body broken and unable to move. At that point, they could have declared Aria the winner, but she moved in for the kill, much to the support of the other female adventurers watching. Kussman could only watch as Aria delivered an axe kick straight to his groin. The view would have been spectacular for Kussman in the beginning, but I’m sure that disappeared as she squashed his family jewels with her heel. I feel like that attack was meant for all of the gawkers too! They have been warned.
