Overlord (Episode 11) – Confusion and Understanding

Overlord Season One Title

Lord Ainz is trying to work out how best to deal with Shaltear when he receives word from Nabel that the guild has summoned him to deal with a vampire. It would appear there may be a way to benefit from this situation!

Overlord (Episode 11) – Confusion and Understanding

What happened?

Nabel revealed that the guild was calling all the Mythryl-level adventurers together in the hopes of dealing with the vampire that killed five Iron Plate adventurers. Realising that they are obviously talking about Shaltear, Momon reveals that he has been hunting the vampire and believes he can take care of this mission alone. Another of the Mythryl-ranked adventurers takes exception to this and demands to come with him. He needs to make sure that this vampire isn’t weak, especially as Momon wants a promotion to Orichalcum should he complete the mission.

After killing the other adventurer who tagged alone, Lord Ainz and Albedo go to see Shaltear. There are signs of a fight, but it would appear that whoever took control of Shaltear’s mind was unable to give her a command before dying. So, now she stands there waiting for a command. Ainz attempts to use a super-magic item to break Shaltear’s status, but it fails. He’s stunned and quickly retreats to a safer point. The only thing stronger than super magic is a world item. He takes Albedo back to Nazarick and places it under lockdown. Then, they head to the mausoleum where Ainz collects some of the World-Level Items his friends left him. With these, he should be able to defeat Shaltear, although Albedo is reluctant to let him face her alone. He promises that he will return, which goes a long way to convincing her.

What did you think?

In Overlord, the episodes tend to follow one of two formats. They are either action-packed extravaganzas or they are much slower, spending time explaining what’s going on and setting up things for one of those action-packed extravaganzas. This was one of the second types, which means the first type will be coming shortly. Surprisingly, you would think that an episode which is mostly Ainz talking to himself, occasionally losing his temper and automatically healing himself, and making grand sweeping statements could get kind of boring. Amazingly, it doesn’t.

This was a good episode that reminded us just how brutal Ainz is. He had the other adventurer killed without hesitation for daring to interfere with his plans to deal with Shaltear. Not only that, but he kept the bodies to use as bases for undead warriors. You seriously don’t want to get on the wrong side of Lord Ainz.

What have you learned?

Several times this season, we got to see how others react to Lord Ainz when they realise just how strong he is. It’s been all one-sided so far. So, when you have a character as powerful as Lord Ainz stop what he was doing and make a hasty retreat, you know that something big is going on. There was panic in his voice and the way he reacted once they were safe enough away removed any doubt about how he was feeling. I always say that one of my favourite things about overpowered characters is how others react to them. Well, it’s just as satisfying when you see the boot on the other foot. It instantly shows you how big the stakes are.

And, since this is one of those episodes that is focused on setting the stage for the action-packed extravaganza, this is an amazing way to do it. We saw how it impacted Albedo when she realised there was a real possibility that something could happen to Ainz. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of him changing his stance and promising her that he would come back or how his confidence suddenly changed after he spent so long saying how dangerous it was, but he doesn’t half know how to rally his supporters.
