Shachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle! (Episode 8) – New Species Discovered

A new species of maju has been discovered and it can talk, or so the rumours go. That’s more than enough for Makoto to get excited and before anyone can object they are entering the dungeon!
What happened?
Makoto is struggling to contain himself as they search for the new species of maju. He spots a group of famnela and attempts to talk to them, but they try to attack and Akari pulls him to safety at the last second. That’s not all though. Makoto spots another rare object and rushes to retrieve it, but the ground isn’t stable. Minato tries to stop him, but they both fall into a hole in the ground. The fall knocks Makoto unconscious leaving Minato to attempt to fight off three skeleton majus, but he’s not really a fighter. Finally, Makoto’s backpack speaks and then eats all three of the skeleton majus. It addresses Minato and makes him promise not to tell Makoto about what happened. When Makoto awakens, they find a mysterious person who guides them back to the surface.

What did you think?
This series has really grown on me and I’m not really sure why. I think it might be the characters who all started out fairly one dimensional but we’ve slowly learnt more about them as time has passed, but it could also be the world which is pretty interesting and there is definitely some sort of big mystery going on. I’m looking forward to seeing just what is going on, although I do worry about that happening this season and this strikes me as a series that may struggle to get a second season. It’s definitely a lot better than I had originally thought.

What have you learnt?
This series has pretty much always had a good amount of comedy and this episode was no exception. I particularly liked the scene where Minato had a conversation with Makoto’s backpack. The other thing that I’m really enjoying with this series is how it’s drip-feeding up information and allowing us to piece together exactly what is going on. There were some exposition style dumps in the early episodes, but it’s come on a long way since then.
