Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (Episode 6) – The Great Dragon Mother is Too Sneaky

What happened?

The Dragon Mother, Leviae, told them that the demon lord already controlled seventy percent of Gaeabrande and if they were to have any hope of defeating him, they needed the legendary sword, Igzasion. Unfortunately, the only way to get the sword is for a human girl with dragonkin blood to sacrifice herself to the abyss. The sword will be born from her flesh and blood. Elulu was the girl the prophecy spoke of. The Dragon Mother gave them some time to prepare for the ceremony, which they planned on performing that evening. Seiya’s response was that it was obvious what Elulu needed to do, however, she wasn’t so sure.

Leviae threw a feast to celebrate the occasion, encouraging their guests to eat and drink. Ristarte gave Seiya a nudge when a couple of dragonkin children offered them some biscuits, hinting that he shouldn’t be rude. Then, Elulu appeared with an armed escort. They walked her towards the abyss, however, she wasn’t sure that she wanted to die. Mash definitely didn’t want her to and tried to stop them, but he was jumped on by several more guards. Then, as the guards tried to drive Elulu towards the edge, Seiya appeared behind them and then kicked them off the edge. Elulu was one of his baggage carriers. If she became a sword, she wouldn’t be able to carry his bags. That would serve no purpose. The Dragon Mother had prepared for this, lacing their food with a powerful paralytic. It would have been a great plan had Seiya not expected that and vomited up all the food as soon as he ate it. Levaie decided to take things into her own hands, transforming into a dragon.

What did you think?

Seiya’s extremely cautious approach to everything and his suspicious nature continue to save them time and again. I love how everyone else thinks that they have adequately prepared for every eventuality, but the reality is that Seiya has already thought of anything they could do and many things that might be completely impossible. I will say that it was quite an obvious idea to bring a dragon-killing sword to the home of the dragons. Still, Seiya one-upped that thought by bringing two. One thing that I would have liked to see this time around was Leviae’s wings getting torn up before she activated her ultimate defence, even if it was just a little bit. Otherwise, the foreshadowing has been excellent in this series, which is why this one thing stood out to me.

Anyhow, Seiya showed that he does care for his party members even if he’s not very good at actually showing it. He basically told Elulu not to go through with it, but he was far too cryptic. I’m glad that he took his bag with him when he went to rescue her so that he could make his point. Overall, it was a fun episode that really highlighted Seiya’s strengths and also showed that there is much more to him than just being really, really cautious.

What was your highlight?

Making Seiya choose between the only weapon that could hurt the demon lord and his companion is a classic fantasy adventure trope. What kind of hero would be willing to sacrifice anyone other than themselves? Not a very good one, that’s for sure. His decision to save Elulu will make his quest to defeat the demon lord harder. A lot harder, but there was just no way he was going to let it happen, baggage carrier or not. Once more, Seiya has proven that he has the character of a hero to go with the title.

He may be awkward and hard to understand at times, but his heart is always in the right place. We saw it again after defeating Leviae when he pretended that Igzasion had appeared. His goal was to reduce the suffering of the dragonkin, too, especially since Leviae had already stated that she would have been honoured to have been able to become Igzasion. Mind you, it’s easy to make that sort of claim if it’s not your life on the line.
