Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (Episode 3) – This Hero is Too Self-Serving
What happened?
While waiting for Seiya to finish training, Ristarte enjoyed a cup of tea with Ariadoa. She told her about Seiya’s issues and how she hopes to be a successful god like her. That’s when Ariadoa tells her that she hasn’t always been successful. There was one world where she was defeated and many lives were lost. That’s when Seiya barged in and complained that he had hit a wall in his training. The shock caused Ariadoa to drop the teapot, much to Ristarte’s annoyance. It’s fine for him to barge in, but not her! Anyhow, after a moment, Ariadoa suggested that Seiya could train with a god to help increase his stats faster. He would gain more experience and the gods cannot kill a human here.
Seiya agreed to give it a go. Luckily, Ariadoa had a god in mind – Cerseus, the Divine Blade. Since he was being asked by Ariadoa, he felt like he had no good reason to decline. Then, after sparring with Seiya for a moment, he was pleased to see that he could back up his talk. Ristarte left them to do their thing. At lunch, she found Cerseus in the cafeteria and he was fairly impressed by Seiya. The next day, his demeanour had changed entirely. A couple of days later, Ristarte found him hiding behind the drying nori, a broken shell of a man. Seiya also found him and dragged him back to training. That was when Ariadoa arrived to tell Ristarte that Ishtar wanted to see her. Ishtar wanted Ristarte to go to the next village where they would find allies to aid them on their quest.

What did you think?
It was another great episode, however, watching it a second time, this was also the episode where it told us everything we need to know about how this series will end. I’m about to spoil some things because I think it’s important to highlight this stuff here as it happens. So, if you don’t want it spoiling run away now and come back later. The first thing was when Ariadoa was talking to Ristarte about the time she failed and it cost a lot of lives. Seiya walked in and she dropped her teapot. It made out that it was the shock of him coming in, but it was actually the shock of seeing Seiya again. We already heard that if Seiya dies, he will just return to his world. It would appear that this isn’t his first time.
Next, Ishtar told Ristarte about Cersues and how he was a fairly cowardly man before he became a god. Ristarte had no idea that gods were former humans, but how could she since they lose their memories before becoming a god. We also know that Ristarte is also a fairly new god, meaning she was recently a human. Have you connected the dots yet? All of these things are related. Otherwise, what would be the point of revealing all of this information? A surprise in a story should be shocking and also completely obvious after it’s happened. Everything we need to know will have already been revealed to us, usually in a casual and unobvious manner. I thought this was very well done. I certainly don’t remember noticing them the first time I watched it.

What was your highlight?
Once more, Seiya’s level of caution was the highlight for me. When they entered the church to meet their new party members, Seiya walked straight up to the head priest and poured holy water on his head. It was such a funny moment because it was perfectly in character for Seiya and it also happened that the head priest was an undead sent to kill them. If things keep happening like this we’re going to start trying to guess what might be coming and how we would preempt any possible scenarios.
However, Seiya then poured holy water on Mash, Elulu and even Ristarte, because she could have become undead when he wasn’t looking… hahaha! For a moment, it seemed like his overly cautious approach had finally been proven to be correct and well thought through. Of course, it was just Seiya not letting anything go to chance, no matter how ridiculous it might be. When he poured some on the unconscious nun it was the funniest thing yet. Seiya is brutal, incredibly cautious, and often right. This series is just too funny.

“I certainly don’t remember noticing them the first time I watched it.”
Okay, me neither! This show’s even better constructed than I thought. Glad you pointed this out!
Without knowing what is coming, these seem fairly inconspicuous but when you know it’s actually very well done.
