How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 8) – Don’t Wake the Demon!

Upon seeing Rem killed before her eyes, Klem screamed in anguish as Krebskulm awakened from within. Now, it’s down to Diablo to find a way to get Klem back before the city is destroyed, leaving Shera to save Rem.
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 8) – Don’t Wake the Demon!
What happened?
Diablo needed to find a way to stop Krebskulm without killing Klem. He also needed to be aware of the barrier towers. Destroy one of those and the Fallen army would attack. Even for a powerful demon lord, this was a little too much. Not to mention the endless supply of mana at Krebskulm’s disposal. Diablo decided to use rune magic, which required him to place several markers on the ground around his target. Luckily, Krebskulm fought like a petulant child staying in one place and attacking with powerful magic that Diablo was able to reflect back on her. Then, as he struggled to place all the runes, Krebskulm threw a coffin at him. She was grabbing anything she could get her hands on to hurl at her attacker. This was a problem for Diablo. Meanwhile, Shera found Rem lying in the church barely hanging on to life. She poured all of the healing potions onto her and prayed for her to recover. Amazingly, she did. However, that meant that Diablo had no more potions for himself. One wrong move and it was game over, without a respawn.
Emile found Rem and Shera and helped them to escape to safety. Then, he ran to tell Diablo that they were safe, enabling him to activate his magic. Diablo was grateful for the news and decided to reward Emile by showing him his forbidden spell. At first, nothing happened. Then, Apocalypse Abyss activated, swirling Krebskulm into an abyss that was particularly powerful against dark magic. Diablo and Emile ran to get clear of the blast radius. Then, as they surveyed the crater that had once been the graveyard, Krebskulm reemerged. She appeared to have suffered no damage… However, as she lifted her arm to attack, it crumbled away. Then, as she closed in on Diablo, Shera and Rem appeared, making it impossible for Diablo to continue to attack. They pleaded with Klem to come back to them and after a moment, she did, breaking free from Krebskulm’s body. Emile promised not to tell anyone, however, Sylvie, who also saw everything was unable to let this slide. Thankfully, Diablo had a plan!

What did you think?
I really enjoyed the fight between Diablo and Krebskulm, especially how Diablo was constantly analysing things in terms of a gamer. He was complaining to himself about her magic defence stats and how hard it would be for sorcerers to defeat her, which would raise a lot of complaints against the developers. I also loved how Emile showed up to tell him to go wild once Shera and Rem were clear. Emile has grown on me a lot more than he did in the anime. He has some great lines and a fascinating code of conduct. And after my comments after the last volume, I was pleased to see that Sylvie stepped into the battle at the end. For a second, I thought we were going to see her actually fight which would have been amazing. Sadly, she was defeated by her own words and Diablo’s idea to use enslavement magic on Klem.
I do wonder if it would have worked had she not agreed to it and while I am completely against the idea of slavery, this seemed like the perfect compromise. Klem has no interest in killing the races and with Diablo as her master, he can help her to achieve that. Of course, it also helps that Diablo is not the sort of person to abuse that power. Anyhow, this was a thrilling conclusion to the Krebskulm arc, however, there is still one thing to be resolved. The volume ended with Alicia preparing to take her own life now that Klem was not going to reawaken and kill the races anytime soon. I can’t wait to see what happens!

What was your highlight?
Immediately after Emile had basically told Diablo that he wouldn’t say anything about Klem, Sylvie showed up and told Diablo that she couldn’t let Klem stay. Not only that, but she appeared to be prepared to fight Diablo. I have a pretty good idea that Sylvie is aware of how strong Diablo is, so the fact that she was ready to go tells me that she is incredibly powerful too. You’d expect that from a guild master and given how Galford reacted to her in the last volume, that seems to be fairly well understood by the characters. I was actually a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see her fight, but the outcome was perfect.
I loved how Diablo is not just about power and magic. He can actually think his way out of a situation like this. In the anime, if I remember correctly, it was someone else’s idea to use enslavement magic, but it definitely made more sense that it was Diablo’s idea. He has continued to grow as a person too. Who would have thought he would be ready to fight Sylvie to protect Klem, but that was what almost happened. The next volume should take things into the second season of the anime and I’m excited to see how the manga handles that. Hopefully, better than the anime did.
