How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Episode 3) – Fallen Assault
Diablo and Shera go on a simple quest that pays well at the request of the Mages Association, no doubt to make up for the last quest. Rem asks to sit this one out because of her connections.
What did you watch?
This was episode 3 of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and I’m still enjoying it. Yes, I am re-watching it and yes I did enjoy it the first time, so it’s not a huge surprise as it was only last year, but I’m spotting a lot more of the minor details and story elements this time around and I am continuously impressed.
What happened?
So after the last quest turned out to be a trap set by Galluk, the drunk angry mage that picked a fight with Diablo, the Mages Association appears to be trying to make up for it by giving them an easy quest that pays well. However, just like in the game, an easy quest can turn sour in the blink of an eye.
Because of her past with Celestine, Rem would prefer to sit out this quest. Diablo orders her to stay within the city walls, allowing her to save face. When Diablo and Shera reach the end of the quest they discover that an army’s of Fallen is marching their way and the guards are going to try to buy the regular people time to escape, but Diablo isn’t about to let them throw their lives away.
What did you think?
It wasn’t as well structured as the first two episodes but was still very good. The reason that this one didn’t quite live up to the others is that it ended with not one, but two cliffhangers! So as a part of the larger story, it’s fine and it did a lot of good work setting up things and revealing just how shrewd some characters are. The next episode promises to have some good conflict.
What was your favourite moment?
Part of me wants to say it was when Diablo stepped out in front of the hundred-strong army of Fallen and started kicking ass, but I actually think it was a far more subtle moment that wins. The quest by the Mages Association was designed not to be a way to apologize to them for the trap, but actually, as a way to get Rem alone. Celestine knew that Rem would not take part in a quest for her, so it was the perfect ruse to send Diablo far away so that she could raise her concerns with Rem. Well done, Celestine. Well done.
What was your least favourite moment?
When the Galluk came into the bar where Celestine and Rem were meeting, he started to rant and rave. Then he pulled a sinister-looking dagger and stabbed himself, transforming into a Fallen and bypassing the protection on the city. The moment itself was pretty cool, although it couldn’t have used a little more context or foreshadowing to make it work better. We believe that he was angry and had reason to hate them all, but how did the Fallen get to him?
Who was your favourite character?
That’s fairly easy. It was Diablo again. I love the internal conflict he deals with all the time. It really makes his outward actions that much funnier and more realistic. After Diablo, it was cool to see Edelgard introduced and when she attacked Diablo on the bridge, it was awesome and a great way to end an episode because I remember watching it the first time and being desperate to see the rest of the fight.
Who was your least favourite character?
It was an all-around funny moment, but that doesn’t excuse Emile Bichel Berger from being a complete buffoon. The brief fight he hadn’t with Diablo was pretty funny, especially when’s he started charging up a big attack only for Diablo to knock him to the ground before he could get ready.
Would you like some more?
As I said, this episode ended with a double cliffhanger. So, yeah. I really need to get on with the next episode. Firstly, we have the fight between Diablo and Edelgard and secondly, there are the Fallen that made it into the city and is within range of Celestine and Rem. Which is his target? Celestine seems to be the obvious choice as without her the city would be unprotected. I can’t wait!
