What happened?
Lumachina was shocked to hear of the level of corruption in the church. There was evidence of all sorts of wrong doings which usually involved bribes and false alegations. However, even with this evidence, the courts were unlikely to punish the church, let alone find them guilty. Alicia suggested that they needed to do a blood purge and almost convinced Lumachina, who was losing her faith in humanity. Diablo managed to reassure her that while may humans have incredible amibition, not all of them use it for the wrong reasons. Lumachina decided that she would go to the catherdral and call them out in person.
Before they even made it that far, they were greeted by Cardinal Vishos, the one who sent the paladin to murder Lumachina. However, instead of accepting her alegations, he simply suggested that it would be impossible for the church to commit crimes, and that it was actually her who had abandoned her duties. He demanded that she attend a confessional, which she agreed to rather than letting Diablo take a firmer action. During the commotion, Horn vanished and ran back to their inn. However, the church had already sent some people to take care of the evidence. What was she going to do?
As she packed up her things, a Goddess appeared from the Holy Grail, which she had used as a potty in Diablo’s dungeon. Babylon declared that she was a leveling-up goddess and could help Horn become stronger thanks to the blood donation she had received… Unfortunately, her leveling-up didn’t work, so she told Horn that a device in the next room would greatly increase her level. It was the subjecation collar that Rose had shown her before. With no other choice, and the determination to help Diablo, she put it on and instantly jumped to level eighty, learning a powerful new skill – charm! Horn charmed the church men into guarding the evidence and then went to help Diablo.
What did you think?
This volume felt a little slow. I think the content covered in this book was turned into a single episode’s worth of anime, which admitted felt rushed, but I’m not sure there was that much more to be done with it. I did enjoy Horn leveling-up and learning Charm. It was even funnier watching her use it as she was not used to being feminine since she had been disguising herself as a boy for most of her life. I did like that all of her existing skills got stronger too and it also gave us an indication of Diablo’s current level.
I remember getting annoyed that Diablo decided to go along with Lumachina’s decision to hand herself over to Vishos. He had planned on killing her on the road, so once he had her in the cathedral away from prying eyes, he could easily have killed her. It felt like Diablo had lost his way. Thankfully, Horn did amazing to get to the confession room they were in and remind Diablo of just what was at stake. He’s about to fight the paladin who hurt Horn and I can’t wait to see him finally let loose once more.
The next volume should be packed full of wonderful fights, especially if they don’t drag this arc into another volume. After that, I will be entering new territory which is really exciting. I can’t wait to see what happens next, especially now that we’ve seen how Rose gets recharged and it was not quite how the anime depicted it. Think about how Krebskulm was awakened from within Rem and I think you’ll get the picture.
