How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 17) – The Demon Lord and Elven Throne!
What happened?
Shera was introduced to Drango, a portly elf who looked more like an orc, but was well-mannered and had the approval of the Queen. However, Shera was still determined to marry Diablo. Rem was shocked by the news and reminded Shera that Diablo was a demon and couldn’t possibly become the king of the elves. Not to mention that the need for an heir to keep the royal bloodline going would be impossible since the different races could not breed.

Before the wedding, Shera took them to see the secret that the elven royal family had been protecting. Deep in the forest, they came across a structure unlike anything the elves would create. It was the tomb for previous kings and queens, but it also housed a portal to another realm. In this realm, they saw the true secret – a demon lord. Kardia, the Demon Lord of the Heart had been imprisoned here and the seal was powered by the king, and even though there hadn’t been a king for a short period of time, the seal was already beginning to weaken. While they were there, Rafflesia saw a vision of her past. It called to her to continue her revenge. Kill the elves and then the humans.

On the morning of the wedding, Rem woke to find that Diablo had vanished. Rafflesia had also gone missing. Rose wasn’t concerned, but took the chance to suggest that Diablo didn’t trust her… Anyhow, as the wedding began, Diablo appeared blowing up a tree and demanding that his property was returned to him. By that, he meant Shera. However, Drango wasn’t about to give up without a fight, but before they could begin, Kardia appeared with Rafflesia. Diablo fought back, discovering that Kardia was still trapped within the crystal, and the version they saw was an illusion. It was using Rafflesia to attack them. Diablo freed Rafflesia, but before they could celebrate, two Fallen appeared and took the crystal holding Kardia. They planned on merging it with their master, the Demon Overlord Modinaram.

What did you think?
Things just keep getting better and better, although Diablo now finds himself in a pickle. Apparently, the ring he let Shera pick from his dungeon allows different races to breed, which means Diablo can become the Elven King and produce an heir. It’s a lot for a shut-in virgin to suddenly have to deal with. However, he seems to be determined to save Shera no matter what. I’m still not convinced that Drango is a good guy either. He used illusion magic to hide Shera’s enslavement collar, and if that was his first thought, I can’t help but think he is hiding other things too!

It seems quite ironic that Rem has just freed herself of a demon lord only for Shera to find herself in a position where he life was about to controlled by one. I’m glad that she realised that and jumped to defend her. Of course, the big surprise was the two Fallen who joined the wedding at the end. One of them blocked Rose’s attack with one hand and then defeated her with a single attack. Diablo is going to have to go hard on this one, which should ensure the next volume starts off strong.

I was also glad to see that Rafflesia survived and still have hopes that she might become a regular character, although being the dark elf chief would make adventuring hard. Anyhow, I’m really enjoying this new part of the story and love that things are getting harder and harder. Maybe, they’ll make a season three of the anime at some point. I just hope they use the same studio that made the first season.
