How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Episode 2) – The Strongest Newcomer

How Not To Summon A Demon Lord Title

Diablo wakes to find himself still in the world that resembles Cross Reverie, but when he wakes, he discovers that he’s not alone. This is not a situation he is remotely prepared for!

What did you watch?

I’m still watching How Not to Summon and Demon Lord. This was episode 2 and already I’m having a blast. One of the great things about re-watching a series is that you spot all the little things that maybe slipped past you the first time. This series is a lot of fun, but it also has some good insight and the story progresses well. All around I’m impressed and I think there’s enough to entertain most, even if you’re not a fan of ecchi.

How Not To Summon A Demon Lord Episode 2 Diablo Tired Of Walking Shera Cheerful

What happened?

Rem and Shera take Diablo to register at the Adventurer’s Guild. That way they can take on missions and earn some money. It’s also the only way to get their skill level assessed. Everything seems to go well until Diablo touches the assessment mirror and causes it to go haywire. The guild master, Sylvie rushes out to see what the commotion is. She invites Diablo, Rem, and Shera into her office where she says she can’t accept them into the guild.

Diablo tells Sylvie that he doesn’t care if he’s a higher level than her as long as she pays them for completing the quests. Happy with that she accepts them in and sends them on their first quest. As they walk to the man-eating forest to kill a giant swamp serpent, Diablo asks why they don’t teleport and it turns out that no one does that or even knows what he’s talking about. Five hours later they arrive at the forest, but everything is not as they expect…

What did you think?

This was another really strong episode. We found out more about Shera this time, giving us another quest to follow. It also started to develop a friendship between Rem and Shera, which was nice. Diablo is so overpowered that it’s great watching the reaction of everyone around him. There was a really insightful moment when Diablo was talking to Shera about levelling up. He observed that in a world where this was their only life, there’s no respawning or reviving, people are more careful. That explains why he is so much higher than anyone else.

What was your favourite moment?

I laughed so hard at the opening scene before the OP. Diablo woke to find himself still in the fantasy world. Then he slowly realised that he was sleeping between Shera and Rem, and that his hands wouldn’t follow his instructions. Sure, that’s silly and a bit funny, but the best part, which is something that this show does really well, was the inner dialogue he was having as he tried to work out how to explain himself. Then, when he tries he goes full edgy demon lord and says the funniest things.

What was your least favourite moment?

So far, I think they’re handling things really well. We’ve now been introduced to the three central characters and have met some of the secondary characters. The main two plots have been revealed and we’re starting to get a better understanding of the world. As such, there isn’t any particular moment that stood out as being the weaker point. This may be where the complaints of fan-service would emerge, but you’ll not hear that here.

Who was your favourite character?

I think this episode did a lot to develop Shera beyond the obvious aspects. She’s bubbly and fun, but also took steps to go it alone, leaving behind a life of privilege and luxury. Obviously, I know more of what she’s referring to as this is my second viewing, so that makes what she says that much more relevant. That said, it shouldn’t take away from the impact on the first viewing either.

Who was your least favourite character?

Maybe I should have given it to him in the last episode, but this time he’s getting it for sure. That would be the mage that picked a fight with Diablo in the last episode and then set up the fake quest, hoping to have the elves do his dirty work for him. He really is a coward and a pretty useless villain on top of that. That said, it’s fine as a way to begin the series and get a feeling for Diablo’s powers. We wouldn’t want him going up against the big bad so early in the series anyhow.

Would you like some more?

As I said, I’m actually really impressed with the attention to storytelling and the way that the show is hitting all the right spots. So far, each episode has helped to develop character and plot. It should be a given, but I’ve seen series where they’ve not developed this much in eight episodes. It’s also handling the ecchi comedy nicely, which is helped by the internal dialogue of Diablo as he deals with his social anxiety.
