How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 19) – Bow to Your Sensei!

When Diablo discovers that his level as a warrior is far too low for him to train under Sasara, he finds it oddly exciting. It’s like being back at the beginning with everything to learn and gain. Now, he just needs to level up fast!
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 19) – Bow to Your Sensei!
What happened?
Sasara tests Diablo and after a few attacks with the back of her sword, she tells him that if he can’t even see her sword then she cannot train him. This is the first time Diablo has felt completely overwhelmed and instead of being upset, he’s excited by the prospects. He leaves vowing to return. Of course, he has a plan to raise his level fast, although it’s not for the faint hearted. Shera and Rem discover that Diablo bought all of the golden apples from the trader, and that he plans on eating them all. They’re worried that they are toxic, but that’s not going to stop a demon lord!

After struggling through the entire pile, Diablo returns to see Sasara. She’s shocked to see him back so soon and decides to make a point this time by attacking with a spear. However, just as she thrusts, Diablo yells for her to stop and then dodges her attack. He assumed she pulled back, but she didn’t. He was the first person to ever dodge her attack, so she would take him on as her first student. She also agreed to train Shera and Rem when she wasn’t focused on Diablo. When they weren’t training, they discovered that the previous Swordmaster had lost himself to jealous and become an Oni – the beast attacking warriors on the mountain.

After twenty days of training, it was time for Diablo to take the test. If he succeeded, he would have surpassed the limits of the races. Sasara already knew that he would pass, but she also knew that when he did, she would need to face her ultimate test – her former master. As expected, the Oni appeared after Diablo’s fight with the Magical Beast Grand Master. Sasara stepped forward to finish training and fully surpass her master. Diablo was in awe of two level two hundred warriors fighting, and was concerned that he wouldn’t be able to keep up even with his magic. Then, when Sasara failed to take advantage of an opening, the Oni cut her down. Diablo jumped in to save her, but he was no match for its skills.

What did you think?
The golden apples came into play much sooner than I was expecting, and I certainly wasn’t expecting Diablo to eat them all between drinking potions to negate the affects of the toxins. Anyhow, they clearly worked as Diablo was able to dodge Sasara’s attack. Of course, to him, it seemed like she had held her attack to a weaker level. That wasn’t the case, and ironically, she should have been with all of the previous applicants, Emile included. She’s a bit of an airhead, but I do love the ditz who is also an absolute monster when it comes to combat.

I noticed that Rem also talked Sasara into coming back to Faltra with them to fight the Demon Overlord, so we’re going to see more of her, provided they aren’t all killed by the Oni that just chopped off one of Diablo’s arms. He’s very careless with his left arm. This is the second time, he’s had it cut off. The training montage was fun and did a great job of revealing Sasara’s past and how she was connected to the Oni. It’s interesting that she became so strong with a sword in such a short period of time. I’m assuming she has a skill that levels up faster.

This volume ended on a big cliff hanger with Sasara in a bad way and Diablo missing an arm. The thing to note is that Sasara realised that Diablo was still levelling up during his fight with the Magical Beast, so I can’t help but image that will continue as he fights a level two hundred Oni swordsmaster. Diablo is going to be utterly unstoppable once he’s mastered the warrior and mage class, and I can’t wait to see that happen.
