How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 3) – Keyboard Warrior!

What happened?

Diablo was making quick work of the Fallen and eventually found himself facing off against their commander, Edelgard. She came at him with her spear and used her strongest martial arts moves on him. He even grew tired of evading her and allowed her strongest attack to hit him straight on, just to see how strong it was. Edelgard was stunned when she saw that he was still standing. Diablo offered her some respect for making him feel pain for the first time since coming here and gave her the chance to flee before he unleashed his ultimate magic. He had to finish things quickly since he’d just received word that a Fallen had infiltrated Faltra and was attacking Rem. Diablo’s attack destroyed the bridge and wiped out the remainder of the Fallen army. Edelgard survived, but only just. Still, they had to hurry back to Faltra so Diablo was going to use some teleportation magic, but would they make it on time?

Luckily for Rem and Celestine, Emile Bichelberger had stepped in to protect them. He attacked the Fallen that had taken over Galluk’s body and appeared to be slowing it down, but even he wasn’t strong enough to stop it. However, he did buy Diablo just enough time. Diablo gave Celestine an HP potion to give to Emile while he took care of the Fallen. The Fallen sorcerer cast dark magic on Diablo that bounced back at him, thanks to Diablo’s demon lord ring. After he had been incapacitated by his own magic, Diablo offered to show what he was capable of. The Fallen sorcerer begged for his life, but Diablo was not playing. He sucked the monster into a tiny black hole to be sealed away forever. After using up about half of his MP, Diablo stayed in bed for the next couple of days. He would have stayed longer had Rem not told them that their adventurer status would be revoked if they had done nothing. Luckily, Sylvie came to find them as she had an urgent quest for them – stop a war breaking out between the elves and the humans!

What did you think?

It’s great to be back in this world with these characters, living through the events that I fell in love with in the first season of the anime. While I think the anime does a better job of handling the action and the “action” (if you know what I mean), the manga gives more weight to the story and the smaller details that the anime doesn’t have time to cover. Experiencing them both is giving me a much greater appreciation of the story as a whole. It definitely makes me want to rewatch it… if only I had the time. Anyhow, I loved the way this volume really pushed things for Diablo, giving him a better idea of just how strong he is, while also letting us see his insecurities and worries.

Seeing Diablo doubling down on the demon lord persona is hilarious as he doubts what he’s doing and worries that he’ll eventually get caught out. I love how he accidentally picks fights with just about everyone while he’s trying to just say enough that they will leave him alone. The conversation with the guard outside the Governor’s mansion was one of my favourites. The guy was massively jealous of him having Shera and Rem in slave collars and was prepared to accuse him of being a Fallen. If Sylvie hadn’t come and cleared things up, Diablo might have had no choice but to follow through with his threats.

What was your highlight?

My favourite thing about overpowered protagonists is not that they are super strong and basically invincible. It’s the way that they come across these wildly overconfident people who are often quite clearly bullies and put them in their place. There’s nothing more enjoyable than seeing someone who deserves it getting knocked back a peg. I have nothing against self-confidence, however, when that makes you treat others poorly that’s when I lose all respect for someone. That’s when you want an overpowered protagonist to show them that they are nothing. Even better when their strongest attack barely scratches them.

I think this series did something amazing with how it handled Emile Bichelberger. At first, he was one of those overly confident guys and he too got shown up by Diablo. However, afterwards, he apologised and offered to help in any way he could. Then, when Rem was in danger, he stepped up and wouldn’t back down even when it looked like he would die. That earned him a lot of respect from me and Diablo. His story was a massive contrast to Galluk’s who couldn’t accept that Diablo was stronger and then tried to get back at him, ultimately giving over his body to the Fallen sorcerer in the hopes of showing everyone they were wrong about him. Seriously, what an idiot! So, be more like Emile and less like Galluk.
