How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 6) – Demon Lord vs Demon Lord!
What happened?
Saddler laughed off Diablo’s claim of being a demon lord, however, he wasn’t too impressed with Alicia for associating herself with those who claim to be demon lords. Then, when Rem stood up for her, he lost it. Being spoken to like that by a demi in a slave collar was all he could take. He asked for divine intervention and appeared to get it, dropping Rem to the floor as she clasped at her throat. Of course, Diablo saw through his tricks and called him out for being a pretend Paladin by using magic. Saddler refused to accept his accusation and then told Diablo to prepare to be judged. His magic bounced back, turning him to stone instead of Diablo. Alicia asked if she should break the statue, but Diablo decided to let his followers carry him away instead. It would be a while before he recovered and he was not a threat anyway.
After that interruption, they headed to Starfall Tower to perform the resurrection ritual. Rem asked Alicia to come with them and she seemed remarkably calm about it, which caused Diablo to eye her suspiciously. Something didn’t add up. Anyhow, they met with Edelgard at the tower and climbed to the top. A magic circle was already prepared. Rem was to lie on the stone plinth in the middle of the tower where Diablo would pour his energy into Krebskulm. He started at her naval but it wasn’t reaching deep enough. Edelgard suggested that he jab his finger through her belly, but he wasn’t about to do that. Then, Edelgard reminded him that she already had a hole that he could use… That was not what anyone was expecting, but needs must. So, Diablo broke new ground for him and Rem as he poured magic deep inside of her. Amazingly, it worked. Krebskulm was reborn, however, it wasn’t quite how Diablo had pictured it. Krebskulm was a small girl and she had no idea what she was supposed to do next. However, she was hungry and when Shera offered her a biscuit, she decided that her purpose in life was to eat biscuits.

What did you think?
I think the confrontation with Saddler was far greater in the manga than in the anime. Having it happen in a tavern surrounded by people, most of whom were demi-humans was ten times better than a secluded alley. Once more, I’m not sure if I’m able to take more in because I can read at my pace rather than following the pace of the anime, but I feel like the manga is giving us loads more details and making things fit together better. I’m definitely getting more from the manga than I remember from the anime which is great because it’s completely justifying my decision to start reading from the beginning, as if I would ever skip parts anyhow!
Krebskulm was hilarious and I have to wonder why she turned out this way. Could it have been Diablo’s magic, the fact that she was resurrected before she was ready, or something else entirely? I hope we get an answer, although it doesn’t really matter. Diablo’s fight with Eulerex was good although he let another one get away. At some point in the near future, Diablo is going to learn that it’s not just about whether they are a threat to him as some people are devious enough to attack those around him to get to him.

What was your highlight?
My main highlight was seeing Saddler turn to stone as he struggled to understand why his magic had been reflected back at him. That was a thoroughly satisfying moment, although I would have been fine with Alicia smashing the statue to pieces too. Anyhow, one thing that I’ve been enjoying has been the way they’ve almost handled Edelgard’s speech. She talks in a broken way with missing words or sentences that are back to front. That adds a wonderful dimension to her character and gives her a very unique voice. I’ve definitely seen some bad examples of using dialect or broken language, but it works here. The only other series that I can think of where it felt really natural was Summer Time Rendering.
In fact, there are several instances where a different voice has changed a character’s perception. Diablo has two wonderfully interesting characters. His outward voice where he tries to maintain the persona of a demon lord is brilliant. I love the absurd confidence and how his inner voice cringes when he says stuff. His inner voice is a wonderful contrast and since he often finds himself criticising his actions, they work as a strange duo that adds some comedy to even the strangest situations. You know the one that I’m talking about…
