Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls (Episode 1) – Everyday Life With a Lamia

Following the revelation of an alternate reality, a monster girl exchange program was created with the hopes of coexisting. That might sound great, however, Kimihito wasn’t expecting to have to host a monster girl, but he couldn’t bring himself to turn her away.
Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls (Episode 1) – Everyday Life With a Lamia
What happened?
Mia is a lamia, half-human and half-snake. She’s cold-blooded which means that she needs to get her body heat from other places. One of those places is Kimihito’s bed. He woke up with her coiled around his body and her boobs in his face. However, when he tried to escape, her grip only tightened, squeezing the air from his lungs. If he didn’t get out soon, he would probably die. Luckily, he managed to get free, but it was a close one. His first duty as a host was to prepare Mia a nice warm bath to begin her day. After slipping into the water, she grabbed him and pulled him in too. Kimihito escaped once more and started preparing breakfast which appeared to include an awful lot of eggs. To his surprise, he found Agent Smith sitting at the table waiting for a cup of coffee.
Agent Smith is the interspecies exchange coordinator who brought Mia to his house and then made him her caretaker. She brought Mia to the wrong place, but that didn’t bother her. Anyhow, Agent Smith was here to remind Kimihito about the laws regarding non-humans. As the host, he needed to ensure that she was never on her own. He had to go everywhere with her. The other thing that was vitally important was that sexual relations between humans and non-humans were strictly forbidden and would likely cause an inter-world conflict. Kimihito reminded her that he had no interest in doing anything like that, although Smith seemed to think he would be easily seduced. Then, Mia burst into the room and pulled Kimihito away from Smith, claiming “Darling” as her own. That didn’t help matters. Anyhow, Kimihito was in for an interesting time!

What did you think?
I’ve read three volumes of the manga so I had a very good idea of what to expect, and I was not disappointed. This episode did an amazing job of showing us how vulnerable and cute Mia is while also revealing the threat she might cause to Kimihito or humans in general. The monster girls are clearly much stronger than humans. I think it handled the exposition quite well by showing things on television and having Agent Smith explain the rules to Kimihito. I’m already a huge fan of Agent Smith, but I’ll talk more about her in a minute.
My only real criticism of the first episode was the excessive use of the infamous horny nosebleed. I think it can be funny for a brief second, but over and over again or exploding out of the nose like he’s about to take off gets old quickly. The funny thing with it is that later in the episode, they showed the character blushing rather than having explosive nosebleeds and that was far more effective. It showed a more vulnerable side to the characters and emphasized the real connection between them. This is my first time watching the anime, which is long overdue, so I’m excited to see what happens in the season. A quick scan of the episode titles makes me think that everything in the first three volumes of the manga will be covered in the first six episodes.

What was your highlight?
Agent Smith was undoubtedly my highlight of this episode. She is an agent of chaos and I love that about her. It would appear that she screwed up by moving Mia into Kimihito’s house, however, she owns that mistake by doubling down on teasing Kimihito and taking advantage of his hospitality whenever she can. When she finds Kimihito and Mia in a love hotel and then recognises him, she calls him Darling in front of all the other agents. The fact that they had to destroy the door and the wall surrounding it to get in just added to the ridiculousness of the situation.
It feels like Smith is determined to make something happen between Kimihito and Mia, although she also can’t help but interrupt them constantly. I’m not sure of her motivation beyond just trying to mess with them, which I really appreciate. I hope that she continues to make things happen and then blocks them just as quickly. She’s a fun character to have in a series because with characters like her, literally anything can and will happen.
