How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 20) – Eye of the Tiger!

After Diablo completed his training, they were attacked by the Evil Ape who was looking to finish its fight with Sasara. However, she failed to finish it off, so it fell to Diablo to step in, but could he defeat a level 200 Swordmaster Oni?
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 20) – Eye of the Tiger!
What happened?
Diablo lost his left arm when the Evil Ape Revealed a second sword. Of course, this wasn’t enough to faze Diablo who quickly countered by freezing one of the Evil Ape’s arms. Even so, he was no match for the former Swordmaster turned Oni. Shera attempted to hit it with an arrow, but that just drew its attention to her. The Evil Ape attacked in a flash, but, amazingly, Sasara had recovered and arrived in time to block its sword. She revealed that she never takes damage on her first hit of the day. However, the blood was because she hit her head when she fell over…

Diablo asked her if she could defeat her former master and adopted father. She confirmed it and then prepared to end it with one more attack – the last technique he taught her. There was a blinding flash of light as their swords clashed and then, once the dust had settled, it became clear that Sasara had won. The Evil Ape returned to its previous form. He recognised Sasara’s incredible abilities before falling to the floor. His wounds quickly got the better of him, but he died happy that he got to fight such an incredible opponent, even if he had become an Oni out of his jealousy for her.

The battle left Sasara mentally and physically exhausted. However, there was no time to rest as the Demon Overlord’s army had begun its march on Faltra. They made preparations for the journey back, which would include collecting Rose from Diablo’s dungeon. Sasara refused to be left behind either and came with them to aid their battle. They just had to hope that the city would still be there when they arrived.

What did you think?
I love little moments of foreshadowing that are sprinkled throughout the story. As soon as Sasara reminded them that she doesn’t take damage on the first hit each day, I instantly recalled the first time she told them. Things like that make the story flow so much better than the heroes just miraculously recovering or getting stronger out of nowhere. I like things to make sense, even if the world is full of magic and monsters. The less I have to question, the more I’m going to accept.

The battle has already begun at Faltra and the Demon Overlord is not playing around. Celestine’s barrier is down thanks to a blast of concentrated demonic power, leaving the adventurers and Galford’s army to hold them back. Unfortunately, they appear to be massively overpowered. Well, everyone but for Galford and Laminitus. Even Emile has been cut down although his injuries are unclear. His two friends are most definitely dead though. Obviously Klem and Edelgard are yet to join the battle, so that should be interesting. Either way, this is going to be an epic fight. The next volume is going to be incredible.

I keep reaching the end of the backlog of various series and now I’m there with How Not to Summon a Demon Lord. Luckily, the next volume comes out in August, so I don’t have too long to wait and I also have plenty of other series to get on with. However, it’s extra hard after getting through twenty volumes in a relatively short period of time to then have to wait. Who knows when volume 23 will be released and any more that come after that. Well, whenever they are available, I will be there to dive back into the story. I’m delighted that I decided to read the manga, even after finding the second season of the anime less than inspiring.

Great review of Volume 20, your breakdown of Diablo and Sasara’s battle sequence and strategic foreshadowing really highlights the story’s depth and pacing. Eye of the Tiger captures the emotional stakes.
Personally, I was thrilled by the realistic depiction of Sasara’s unique skill and loved revisiting her backstory layers. I’ve been using Line Art Colorization to bring key moments to life in my fan art, recreating the climactic duel’s intensity panel by panel and celebrating the author’s craft.
Thanks, I’ve been really impressed with just how well structured this series has been and how well it foreshadows events. Sasara is a very cool character and her back story was good.
The fan art sounds cool. Is there anywhere I can check it out?
