How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 7) – The Demon Within!
What happened?
Since Rem is sleeping in Alicia’s room, Shera takes the chance to get some close time with Diablo, and by close, I mean real close! Of course, Klem is curious as to what is going on so Shera asks her to join them. She decides to give it a go and before Diablo can protest he is sandwiched between the two barely dressed girls. As Klem gets into it, she unleashes her magic into Diablo, curing all of his ailments and recovering his HP. Maybe, he can accept her gifts since he’s a demon. In the morning, Rem comes in to find them all still lying in the bed, still barely dressed. She wakes them up and offers Klem some biscuits. Rem is going to tell Celestine about Klem since she believes she can trust her. Diablo allows it and takes Shera and Klem for breakfast. While there, Sylvie comes to investigate the reports of a new girl in Diablo’s party. She seems suspicious, but can’t get over how cute Klem is, so she thinks nothing of it.
When Rem returns, she explains that Celestine would like to meet with Klem in a cafe. Shera is excited to visit a cafe, too. Alicia comes along to help should anything go wrong. Celestine is happy that Klem is not a threat and understands the pressures of being trapped by fate. After the meeting, Alicia led Klem away in a busy market, however, Rem followed her. Unfortunately, she walked right into Alicia’s trap. There is more to awakening the demon lord and the key component is hate. Just then, Saddler arrives with his men and prepares to capture Rem, a demon lord worshipper. Rem makes Klem promise not to hurt anyone. She agrees but then has to watch as Rem is captured and taken to a church in the north of the city. Saddler plans on torturing Rem or beginning her salvation as he puts it. However, after failing to cut off Rem’s ear and then stabbing her in the arm, he turns to Klem who speaks out against him. Saddler soon realised that she was not a human. He goes to attack her, but Rem gets in the way. Saddler stabs her again for interfering, but that stirs the hatred in Klem, awakening her true form!

What did you think?
I loved the way this volume developed the bond between Klem and Rem, giving them both a common ground, however, that also led to the resurrection of Krebskulm. It was interesting that Alicia had originally planned on luring Shera to be the catalyst, but was able to make things work with Rem. I think it makes more sense that it’s Rem too as this is her part of the story. Shera had the stuff with the elves and Rem had the demon lord trapped inside of her. Anyhow, it was a very powerful scene and quite disturbing watching Saddler attempt to cut Rem’s ear off and also when he described what he was planning on doing to her.
It was also amazing to see Saddler realise that he wasn’t a god when Krebskulm punched him into oblivion. He absolutely had that coming. However, I didn’t enjoy seeing Alicia come out and openly betray Rem. We knew it was coming, especially as the manga has been a lot clearer about her intentions from the beginning, but that didn’t make it any easier to stomach. I wonder how it will handle the process of bringing her back. The anime just kind of threw her into things and everyone was all right, fine, welcome back. I’d like to see her earn it a little more in the manga, which should happen in the next volume.

What was your highlight?
Sylvie has always been a bit of an enigma in the anime. She has always been a fun character and since she’s head of the guild, you can guarantee that she’s quite strong, despite her appearances. However, seeing her stand before the governor and warn him to stay out of their way and let Diablo handle things was very interesting. He didn’t want to concede to her, but I could tell that he was afraid of her. Just who is Sylvie and what’s her story? I don’t think the anime gave her enough time so I hope the manga shows us some of her backstory and gives her more time to shine, and not just as a body pillow for a drunken Diablo.
I’m really enjoying the manga, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as I loved the first season of the anime. Soon, I should be getting to the point where we move past the first season so it’s going to be interesting to see if the manga does a better job of continuing the story. My gut tells me that it will and the problem with the second season was down to the adaptation and the lack of animation in the anime. At least in the manga, they’re supposed to be still images, but I think the action will still flow better. Only time will tell. First, Diablo needs to deal with Krebskulm while Shera rescues Rem.
