How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 5) – Boss-level Badass!

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Volume 5 Cover

Diablo finds himself locked in battle with the Governor of Faltra, Galford and he’s unlike anything he’s faced so far. As well as being incredibly strong, he’s a tenacious foe who excels at combat. This could get messy!

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Volume 5) – Boss-level Badass!

What happened?

Luckily, Diablo has studied all the manuals on how to fight a wizard since it’s best to understand what your opponent will do. Despite Galford’s experience and strength, he’s following the plan to the letter. That gives Diablo the chance to create an opening and hit Galford with a big attack. Amazingly, Galford isn’t down, but he realises that he’s outmatched. Then, he’s surprised when Diablo lets him live. Of course, Diablo doesn’t actually want to kill anyone, but he can’t admit that as a demon lord so he dismisses him as beneath his efforts and isn’t interested in any report that he could send to the king. He also has Alicia on his side and she is going to set the record straight with the king anyhow. After two epic battles, Diablo was drained so he took the time to rest in his room. Sylvie came to offer him something to help, but Diablo’s intolerance to alcohol left him drunk and in need of a body pillow…

Once he had recovered, he went on a mission with Shera and Rem so that Shera could practice summoning. She summoned a turkey shot. Rem wasn’t that impressed but Diablo has a cunning plan for Shera. She could share her sight with the turkey shot and that would allow her to see targets out of her line of sight and hit them with an arrow. After all this activity, Shera suggested that they bathe in the nearby river, especially since Rem was so stinky! Diablo, however, was in for a shock as they bathed in the nude. He emerged from his hiding place when he heard Shera scream. When he came out, he saw Edelgard holding Rem up by her arm. She revealed that she knew that Rem was the host for Krebskulm and that she wanted to help them get it out of her. Diablo could even perform the ceremony which would leave both Rem and Krebskulm intact. After that, the truce would be over. However, there was another problem coming their way in the form of a Paladin – one of the church’s vicious enforcers. What will he do when he discovers that Diablo is a demon lord?

What did you think?

The fight with Galford was excellent and perfectly showed off Diablo’s knowledge and skills while also allowing him to keep up his lofty goals of pretending to be a demon lord. I also loved that we saw Alicia killing Galford’s soldiers who were trying to stop her from reporting what happened. We also saw that once she met with the king, she adjusted her story to keep vital information to herself that Galford hadn’t revealed either – such as Diablo. We also saw that Alicia was working with Edelgard and viewed humans and demi-humans as inferior races.

After the initial conflict was resolved with Galford, everything else was all about setting up future events. We met Saddler and saw Edelgard’s intentions. Knowing that Alicia and Edelgard are working together could have been a bit of a spoiler, but I think he shows that Diablo doesn’t know everything and can’t foresee every eventuality. It’s nice that we are aware of things that the main characters aren’t at this stage because we get to see how they react to it without having to get over the surprise at the same time. Anyhow, this was another fun volume. I’ve got fifteen more to get through and another on preorder. I’m excited to see where things go.

What was your highlight?

Once more we’ve been shown just how astute Diablo is and how well he knows the mechanics of this world, even if things are slightly different. Rem was quick to tell Shera that her summons was a common and frankly rubbish summon. However, Diablo knew that it was the perfect companion to Shera. If she can see a target she can hit it with an arrow. Now, she has a greater field of vision thanks to the shared sight with the turkey shot, making her ten times more dangerous with a bow.

The more I think about things, the more I realise that the title of this series is wildly inaccurate. If you’re going to summon a demon lord, this seems like the best possible outcome. He’s insanely powerful and yet cautiously timid. He’s knowledgeable and quick to grasp concepts that he’s not familiar with. You could argue that the enslavement contract backfiring was a problem, but that just forced him to stick with them and get involved in their worlds. Sure, he might have stayed anyway, but this cemented it. If anything this was an incredibly successful summons.
