What happened?

When it became clear that Edgar’s knights couldn’t take Runa and Sora by force, he demanded that they hold the citizens hostage until Rein relented. Luckily, for everyone but Edgar and his knights, Rein discovered that he had learned how to cast simultaneous spells, a gift from his contract with Sora and Runa. He uses it to burn all the knights, saving the citizens and sending Edgar running. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of it. The citizens thank Rein, but warn him to run away or else Edgar will be back. Upon filing a complaint with the Order of Knights, Rein discovers that they have all been bought by Edgar.

On their way back to their room in the inn, they are stopped by the vice-captain, Stella Enplace. She tells Rein that she wants their help to defeat the corruption in the Order of Knights and bring the lord and his son to justice. Of course, Rein is happy to help. Kanade wants to charge in and grab them while Tania was ready to burn the lord’s castle to the ground. However, Rein comes up with a plan to catch them all in the act. They set a trap and lure the Order of Knights into a barn. Runa and Sora freeze the doors so that they can’t escape while Rein and Stella take care of the knights inside.

Edgar soon learns that his paid-for knights have been arrested and that Stella is now the captain. He’s pretty sure that his personal knights are more than a match for them, but then a cloaked figure appears at his window, warning him that Rein is too strong for him to stop. Arios gives Edgar a magic ring and tells him that it will kill whoever he targets with it. Then, Arios leaves and waits for Rein to finally meet his match!

What did you think?

We’ve known that Arios wasn’t the hero for some time now, but this just about confirms his fall into darkness as he’s handing out cursed magical rings and tempting wicked people to fight Rein for him. Is Arios the Demon King? It’s certainly possible and I’ve been thinking a story that focused on the hero losing himself under the pressure and becoming the villain would be fascinating. I’m not sure if Beast Tamer is really the story to truly explore that idea, but it’s a great start. I’ve enjoyed this series a lot and seeing it find a bit of balance between the goofy, fun segments and the more serious elements has been a real surprise.

I loved the moment that Tania lost it and was about to burn everything to the ground. She’s easily my favourite character. However, Kanade may be in for a run as my second favourite with the introduction of Stella. She’s a knight so she knows how to handle a sword and proved it when she easily beat Gilet Stregar. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, she did it while having heels built into her armoured boots. If Tania wasn’t a fiery redhead she could have been in trouble… But she is, so it’s all good. I’m just looking forward to seeing Edgar get the beating he deserves, especially after seeing him beating the fox girl! What a monster!
