Beast Tamer (Episode 11) – Black Waves
What happened?
Stella, Tania, and Kanade approach from the front gates and demand to inspect the lord’s property. Of course, the lord’s hired knights have no intention of letting them in as it will expose their corruption too. As expected, they fight which is just what Tania was hoping for. Meanwhile, Rein, Sora, and Runa have slipped into the manor via the basement. Runa used a spell to locate any potential hostages. However, while doing so she discovers a huge mana signal. Maybe it’s another ultimate species. It’s at least as powerful as the fairies. Rein is concerned that it might be Edgar’s ace but decides that he needs to check it out, leaving Runa and Sora to evacuate the hostages.
Rein finds the source of the mana signature – a young fox demi-god! She appears to be being held prisoner. Rein bursts into the cell and approaches the terrified little girl. He notices that she has a slave collar on, something that Edgar forced her to put on or watch some local children die. Of course, she did and has been his punching bag ever since. Rein uses his beast-tamer powers to counter the magic that locks the slave collar, freeing Nina. On his way out, he bumps into everyone else coming in. They are surprised to see that he’s found another ultimate species, but not that surprised.
Then, the lord runs into the hall and tries to flee. Rein restrains him, but then Edgar arrives and uses the cursed ring that Arios gave him. It casts an automatic death spell on Rein, which summons the Grim Reaper who cuts Rein down. However, Rein didn’t die, and Runa has a theory of why. She casts a poison attack on him which should have instantly killed him, but he survived. Well, it turns out he has a status nullification ability thanks to contracting with Runa. Does that mean he’s immortal? He’ll get a chance to find out as the demon that was trapped in the ring was reborn from Edgar’s corruption!

What did you think?
I think one of my favourite things about this series has been how familiar the characters have become. They completely understand Rein and are often feigning surprise at his actions. They know what he’s going to do and are already prepared to back him up, even before he’s had a chance to tell them. Now, it might sound boring that he’s so predictable, but this makes it entertaining. Had he just been predictable without the girls teasing him every time, it definitely would have.
There was yet another clue in this episode about the true power of the beast tamers. Rein noticed the magic used in the slave collar was similar to beast tamer powers and was able to nullify it. I mentioned earlier about how the way the Demon King controlled the people also seemed very similar to beast-tamer powers. I think the ultimate battle in this story will be the battle between the Demon King and Rein and it’s going to come down to who has the strongest team. I also think that given Arios’ slip into darkness, he could well find himself on the Demon King’s team. He might already be there considering the way he acts.
