Beast Tamer (Episode 3) – Another Ultimate Species

Rein and Kanade were handsomely rewarded for defeating and capturing the Ebon Fangs. They got so much that they were able to rent a room at the inn. However, it’s just one room and that’s making Rein uncomfortable.
Beast Tamer (Episode 3) – Another Ultimate Species
What did you watch?
When I started this series, I was pretty sure I was going to enjoy it. However, I had no idea just how relaxing it would be, especially after the opening scene when the Hero’s party kicked Rein out. Since then, it’s been the most warm and cuddly series I’ve seen in a while. Anyhow, this is only the third episode so anything can happen from here. I’m hoping for more of the same, so let’s find out what happened.

What happened?
It took all night, but they successfully captured and handed every member of the Ebon Fangs over to the authorities. Because of their success, Rein and Kanade were summoned to the Adventurers’ Guild where they were given a promotion and a large reward. It was enough for them to stock up on items, have a fancy meal, and rent a room at the inn. The innkeeper seemed delighted to get to play matchmaker as she forced Rein into accepting a room for them. That’s right, they would have to share a room. Rein tried to sleep outside, but Kanade wouldn’t let him. Friends don’t let friends sleep outside.
After a week of completing quests and generally having a lot of fun, Rein and Kanade were approached by the receptionist at the Adeventurers’ Guild. There is a hooligan known as the Guard Dog that is stopping people from crossing an important bridge. If they could get rid of the Guard Dog, they would earn five gold coins, however many an adventurer had already failed. When they got to the bridge, they soon learned why. The Guard Dog is a dragon, or more specifically a Dragonoid. She took on human form and introduced herself as Tania. Then, she told them that if they wanted her to go, they would have to defeat her!

What did you think?
I come away from each episode feeling completely refreshed. I don’t think this series is technically an Iyashikei anime, but it feels like it. Sure, there are fights and a little conflict, but it’s generally fairly superficial and when everything is done, everyone becomes friends. Just look at Tania who has now accepted a contract with Rein because of how nice he was to her. Even Kanade wasn’t mad that she had to share Rein with Tania and that’s because he is so wonderfully naive, but in a good way. We saw that with how he behaved when he was almost forced to share a room with Kanade, and then Kanade and Tania. This series is so pure and wholesome, that I almost feel bad comparing it to Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World.

What was your favourite moment?
There were several entertaining moments in this show and most of them involved Tania. The battle on the bridge was excellent and for a show that is so laid back, it managed to put on quite a show here. Of course, it ended in the most delightfully Rein Shroud way with him asking her to move on and not do anything similar again. She asked what he would do if she didn’t listen to him. He said he didn’t know. Then, he protected her and even helped her hide what she really was. Of course, she would want to form a contract with him.

Who was the most impactful character?
I made a pretty quick decision to watch this show based on the premise. However, there was one other reason and that was Tania. I saw her on the promo image and knew without a shadow of a doubt that she would be my favourite character. So, when we met her on the bridge and she was just as fiery as I’d imagined it was as if the universe collectedly nodded its head. Everyone who knows me would have put money on Tania being the character I would have identified. If ever there was a positive moment for tropes and archetypes this is it. Sometimes, it’s amazing knowing what you’re going to get. Also, I’m watching the dub and Molly Searcy nailed Tania’s voice. It’s exactly what I was hoping for.

What have you learned?
This series is basically saying that most people treat these Ultimate Species like things so when Rein treats them like people and is kind and nice to them, they are so shocked by his approach to life that they instantly want to form lifelong contracts with them… I feel like this is a shocking indictment of the way people are today or maybe it’s a hint for young Japanese boys (the target audience). If you’re nice to girls they might like you enough to marry you. Seriously, just be nice to everyone. Obviously, there’s more to it than just being nice, but there’s no better place to start in life. We may not realise it but Rein is the hero we need!
