Bikini Warriors (Season One)
What did you watch?
Let’s see. What is the best way to justify intentionally watching a show called Bikini Warriors that doesn’t sound creepy? No, it’s not possible. Anyhow, I picked up Bikini Warriors on a whim several years back and had a great time. Each episode is only four minutes long which meant that I managed to watch the whole season in one go, and it didn’t take very long. With its name and the main cast of buxom beauties, I felt that it was my job to explain what this series is really about. Yes, it is ecchi, but if you’ve ever played an RPG, you’ll be in for a treat. Stock up on healing potions, we’re going in!

What happened?
The Bikini Warriors are on a quest to defeat the demon lord and bring peace to the land. They’re young and attractive, but that alone won’t help them win. They’ll need to go on several other quests to gain the equipment and skills they need. They’ll need to pull together as a group, which will invariably lead to disagreements. They will need to overcome all obstacles in their way before they are ready to take on the demon lord.
Their first mission is to acquire some armour suitable for such a quest. Luckily, there’s a blacksmith known for his fine workmanship. All of the girls but Fighter purchase the armour. She’s concerned that it might be a little revealing and as such offer little to no protection. Of course, she was wrong. Mage, Paladin, and Dark Elf cannot praise their new armour enough so Fighter returns to the shop and reluctantly purchases her set. The blacksmith also has something special that might interest them…

What did you think?
This series is hilarious. There is a lot of bouncing and jiggling so if that’s going to be a problem for you, best to give it a miss. I think you’ll be missing out though as this is a great parody of role-play gaming. We’ve all seen the game where the female adventurer is wearing some sort of bikini armour. Well, this is all about that and other situations that occur. There’s an episode where they go into random people’s houses and plunder whatever they can find to help them on their quest. I know I’ve done that in games like Zelda. This is actually a very cleverly put-together parody, but it also embraces the ridiculousness of the bikini armour to pull you in.

What was your favourite moment?
In episode six, the Bikini Warriors venture into a forest where people are being attacked by a mysterious monster. It takes their clothes, their items, and their dignity. The Bikini Warriors cannot let this continue. Of course, they find the monster, lose some clothing in the battle, but emerge victorious. The best thing about this episode is that before the fight, they are searching the forest and in every shot, there are branches and leaves that make them look like they’re naked already. It was hilarious.

What was your least favourite moment?
With the episodes only being four minutes long, there’s not a lot of filler so that makes it harder to find weaker moments. Sure, there are some episodes that aren’t as funny as the others, but there’s usually something entertaining happening in those four minutes. There was a moment where Mage was possessed by a wizard and turned on the others. They killed her and even had a gravestone made. Then, Mage was back in the next episode and it was as if it never happened. It’s funny, but I would have liked to see some sort of fallout from that. Although we do know they can revive fallen people as Paladin is constantly sacrificing herself.

Who was your favourite character?
Fighter was easily my favourite of the four main characters. She has a sword which is bound to score points with me, however, she’s also the character that raises the most objections to the crazy stuff the others do. She also gets her head down and does what needs to be done in order for them to survive.

Who was your least favourite Character?
I liked all of the main characters but Mage was probably my least favourite. She was the bubbly goofball of the group. Paladin and Dark Elf had a more sinister streak to them which I found entertaining. In fact, Mage’s best moment was when she was possessed by the wizard, which I think says a lot about how much of an impact she had on the group.

Would you like some more?
Absolutely. I quite enjoy shorter episodes for this sort of anime. They can focus on a single joke and do it well without dragging it out too long. There’s plenty more material that they could parody from RPGs and they could even branch into full fantasy and isekai types shows.

What have you learnt?
It just goes to show that there is the potential for humour anywhere. You just have to look at things with a critical eye and ask some questions. Should I be going into NPCs houses and smashing the place up looking for items? Should we recruit new party members in bars? Can a bikini really function as armour? Obviously, the answer is yes to the last one, but I think you understand what I’m saying.
I do think that something like this could sustain a longer series, although the characters would obviously need to be fleshed out considerably. If you take a look at the epic last episode which crams so much into an incredible montage you will see just how much potential there was for this story to be bigger.
