Goblin Slayer II (Episode 11) – The Princess’s Ordeal

They arrive at the legendary Dungeon of the Dead and have been warned not to go below the fourth floor as certain death awaits them there. Luckily, the goblins are likely to follow the same advice. Not to find the Princess before something bad happens!
Goblin Slayer II (Episode 11) – The Princess’s Ordeal
What happened?
Noble Fencer, the adventurer they had rescued from the goblins that occupied the mountain fort was the one to recommend Goblin Slayer’s party to the King. However, she could only watch as Goblin Slayer headed out. Accompanied by Sword Maiden, they both hoped for the end of all goblins. Goblin Slayer and his party arrived at the fortress that stood before the Dungeon of the Dead, however, they slipped past it and made their way inside. Once inside, it didn’t take long before the goblins were attacking. The element of surprise was not a tool they could use this time. After battling their way through the horde with Goblin Slayer finishing them off with another of his gate scrolls – this time linked to the upper atmosphere…
After descending in an elevator, they emerged with Priestess leading the way with Blinding Light. The others charged out and attacked, however, the goblins had a goblin priest who put up a protection spell with it and the Princess inside. They appeared to be going nowhere until Priestess used Purify to undo the sacrifices the goblin priest had performed, sapping his power and removing the protective barrier. Goblin Slayer charged forward even as the goblin priest held the Princess hostage. Before it could react, Goblin Slayer kicked him in the nuts and saved the Princess. Meanwhile, the Hero’s party had been sent to the mountaintop to deal with another monster, but why were there so many goblin corpses scattered around?

What did you think?
Time for a little backstory from the books. The Dungeon of the Dead was releasing a terrible miasma into the world which could only be stopped by conquering the dungeon. Many adventurers died, but that was also why there was a fortress city at the base of the mountain. Entrance to the dungeon was controlled by the guild to ensure that no one too weak would go in and try their luck. I’m not sure if something had happened to the fortress city, but I can only assume something did or that they hoped to avoid attracting attention. Either way, I feel like there’s a lot here that needs further explanation.
It was a fun episode and I liked how it showed us how Noble Fencer is doing and how both she and Sword Maiden are still terrified of goblins, and rightly so. I also love it when Goblin Slayer thinks outside of the box and using the difference in air pressure to suck the goblins through a gate that would drop them back down to Earth from a high altitude was inspired. It was even funnier when you realised that in doing that, he made sure the monster the Hero’s party faced was an easy win as it absorbed the goblin’s bodies and gained their attributes. Not something you might want to do if you’ve come from the heavens and plan on conquering the world.

What have you learned?
Priestess really stepped up in this episode and that was quite impressive given her attitude towards how the Princess had treated her, which was justified. For a while, they made a point of telling us that the magic casters needed to be at the back so that when Priestess stepped forward and made a decision to help the party with her magic as an offensive move, it was duly noticed. First, she used Blinding Light to stun the goblins and give them a chance to attack first. Then, she noticed that the goblin leader was a priest and not a shaman. Finally, she realised that they were performing sacrifices, which no doubt had something to do with the monster the Hero’s party fought and/or resurrecting the Demon Lord. Having noticed, she figured out how to use her miracles to break the protection spell.
It’s even more impressive given that she struggled with a few quests this season as she was reminded of her first quest every time she saw the Red-Haired Mage. I’m glad that she’s taking a more leading role in the party, however, I still can’t help but think the goblin leaders have all been fairly weak compared to last season. There was an ogre that nearly killed them, a Goblin King with an army at his disposal, and the goblin champion in the tunnels beneath Water Town who almost killed Goblin Slayer. I appreciate that they are getting stronger, but to make it more entertaining, the enemies should be getting stronger too. It’s not quite been the step up that I was expecting from season two.
