Goblin Slayer Side Story II: Dai Katana (Volume 2) – There’s Always Tomorrow!
What happened?
Myrmidon Monk came prepared with maps of the dungeon. He offered some advice about how things change and you can’t even trust your eyes. They need to be making their own maps because of this. However, the Monk will be part of the front three so he cannot be tasked with this. Their Captain gives the role to the Sword Maiden. Maybe, her poor sight will make her better suited for the role, especially if they can’t trust their eyes. Female Warrior completes the front three along with the Captain. That leaves Female Wizard and Half-Elf Scout to bring up the rear with Sword Maiden. Their trip is fairly uneventful as they head towards the first room on the first floor. They plan on going no further on their first day.
Inside, they find a group of small humanoid monsters. Sword Maiden instinctively lets out a shriek as they approach. It’s goblins. The Captian, Myrmidon Monk, and Female Warrior charge in even though the numbers are not in their favour. Captain takes a couple of hits from a club, but his armour takes the brunt of it. He turns, slashing his sword and cleaving the goblins in two. After they’ve defeated them all, a chest appears. Half-Elf Scout steps up and inspects it for traps. Happy that it’s safe, he opens it and finds a pile of gold coins. That’ll do for today. They head back to the entrance and encounter some slime. They quickly defeat them… or so they thought! One drops on Female Warrior and tries to force its way into her mouth. She’s drowning! Sword Maiden manages to use a fire spell to burn it off, but it takes Female Warrior some time to recover. They made it out, but it could have been worse. Thankfully, there will be a tomorrow.
What did you think?
When the second season of Goblin Slayer felt like a less intense version of the first season, I decided that I should really get back to reading this series. It predates Goblin Slayer and follows a team of adventurers as they try to clear the Dungeon of the Dead. One of their party members is the Sword Maiden who goes on to become a member of the hero’s party and defeats the Demon Lord. It’s interesting to see her before she became so influential. I love how considered the Captain is. He’s definitely come prepared and knows that morale is a huge part of their survival.
The team is bonding well and there have been hints about monsters that look like adventurers in the Dungeon of the Dead. Whether they are monsters or just wicked adventurers is yet to be seen but it’s clear that Female Warrior’s previous team were attacked by a group just like that. I’m enjoying the way we’re seeing them start from nothing. It’s going to be interesting to see just how far they go because I get the feeling this party will get a lot stronger. I do wonder if everyone will make it as we only really know of Sword Maiden in the time of Goblin Slayer. This is a much darker and more gritty tale which is just what I needed after the sanitised version of Goblin Slayer we got in season two.
