Issei bumped into Asia while preparing to rescue her and had the first date he wished he had the first time, however, just like then, Raynare showed up and stabbed him with a spear of light. This time, it was Asia she wanted!

What happened?

Rias had forbidden Issei from seeing Asia anymore. However, he wasn’t going to just sit back and let Asia be controlled by the Fallen Angels. He needed to get stronger and that meant some training was in order. Issei headed to the part and got to work, but before long he bumped into Asia. He was as surprised as anyone. Since they both had some free time, they hung out. It was the best first date he’d ever had, but then Raynare appeared and she wanted Asia.

To save Issei, Asia agreed to go with Raynare. When Issei updated Rias as to what happened she was furious. Then, she explained how the Evil Pieces work and how a pawn can promote itself to any other piece but a king when in enemy territory. However, she told him not to go rescue Asia. He would certainly not survive alone. As soon as Rias was gone, Issei headed for the door. He was going whether she liked it or not.

Kiba and Koneko said they were coming too since that was pretty much what Rias had said to Issei – don’t go alone and you can promote yourself there. They burst into the church where the Fallen Angels had taken Asia while Rias and Akeno occupied the other Fallen Angels outside. However, to get to Asia, they would have to get past Freed Sellzen and he wasn’t too happy to fight the same devil more than once. They beat him, but by the time they got to Asia, Raynare had already removed her sacred gear, killing her!

What did you think?

The Evil Pieces suddenly became that much more interesting. The idea that Issei can promote himself to another piece is a great enhancement and thinking of the pieces as having different strengths makes sense too. I liked how Kiba heard everything Rias said differently from the way Issei did. That was actually some fairly clever dialogue that allowed it to be interpreted in both ways. It also shows that Rias isn’t going to spoon-feed them.

We got to see Akeno showing off her darker side once more and we even got a Magical Girl-style transformation which was awesome. Was it better than Raynare’s in the first episode? I’m not sure, not that it matters. This brings me to one of my few criticisms of this season – they really should have used Raynare more. Every time she’s involved things get a little crazier and she has some fantastic lines that double up as innuendos.

It certainly left things on a massive cliffhanger with Asia about to die now that her sacred gear had been removed. And talking about sacred gears, we’re yet to see anything from Issei in regard to his one. Fun times are coming! Crazy fun times! Crazy bouncing jiggly fun times!
