High School DxD (Episode 1) – I Got a Girlfriend!

Issei is a hopeless loser who spends his day fantasizing about girls, but that’s as far as his experience went. So, it was quite a surprise when he was asked out. Even more so when she killed him!
High School DxD (Episode 1) – I Got a Girlfriend!
What happened?
Issei and his friends transferred to this school two years ago, shortly after it became a co-ed school in the hopes of getting with the girls. Since then, they have had exactly zero girlfriends. They have, however, built up a reputation as the group of pervert losers that are always spying on the girls and watching porn. It’s hard to imagine why they haven’t had any luck with the girls. There is one girl that has caught their eye – Rias Gremory, an exchange student from Northern Europe with fiery red hair. She also appears to be watching them.
On the way home from school, Issei was approached by a girl from another school who asked him out. Was he dreaming? No! It was real. She wanted to be his girlfriend and he wasn’t about to turn her down. They went out on a date on the weekend where they shopped, ate, and had fun. Then, on the way home, Yuma asked Issei if he would do something for her. Anything, he replied. She asked if he would die for her! Then, she transformed into a black-winged angel and stabbed him through the heart.
As he lay dying, his thoughts turned to Rias Gremory and how he wished he had had the chance to squeeze her boobs. What a wasted life! Then, a glowing red circle appeared and Rias stepped out of it. She told him that since he was dying, she would take him in. He woke the next day as if nothing had happened, but he couldn’t help shake the feeling that it wasn’t a dream. After tracing his steps from before, he came across another black-winged angel who tried to kill him again. Rias intervened once more and then took Issei home!

What did you think?
I think this might be my third time watching High School DxD and surprisingly, I enjoyed it much more this time. I loved it the first time and have seen all four seasons, but this time I was able to really appreciated the tone and artistic choices that, in my mind, make this the best season. While there were lots of panty shots and bouncing boobs, none of that detracted from the mysterious mood of the episode. It did a good job of painting Issei as completely hopeless while maintaining his secrets. I loved the way his body changed after becoming Rias’ servant.
Of course, the scene with Yuma when she asked Issei to die for her was my favourite. Her transformation was incredible with her fallen angel costume literally slithering across her body like ooze. However, it was the way she spoke to Issei that made the scene so impactful. She was vicious and sadistic, clearly taking pleasure in his confusion and fear. It teased us with all sorts of information, but nothing concrete. Anyone watching it for the first time, should be asking why? There are some great hooks.
The real star of the episode was Rias Gremory who had few lines but made every one of them count. Even when she wasn’t speaking, she exuded a confidence that made it impossible to look away from the screen. She is absolutely captivating. This is a fantastic start to the series, playing off all the things I love – mystery, boobs, demons, dark tones, boobs, creepy atmosphere, and sinister music. Oh, and the boobs!

One of the things I love about DxD is nipples. Other ecchi anime go to extreme lengths to hide nipples. Sometimes it is obvious that nipples move around to different positions on a breast so they can hide under whatever weird strap or random wisp of hair that happens by. Sneaky little critters!
Worst of all is when you see the whole breast but there is no nipple. Talk about degrading imagery!
Free the nipple!
Absolutely. If they don’t want to show nipples then they need to dress their characters accordingly. Better yet, just free the nipple.
I feel like there should be a parody show with guys with long hair that it always mysteriously covering their nipples.
Haha!
