What happened?

His body was literally trying to warn him away from Asia, but Issei didn’t really put the pieces together until Rias told him in no uncertain terms that he cannot enter a church and that mixing with people associated with the church is a bad idea for devils. Especially as there are Exorcists who specialise in killing devils and once they kill you, there’s no coming back. Issei is upset but accepts Rias’ advice.

Before he can go home for the day, Akeno relays a message that there is a stray devil in their territory that they need to take care of. Rias decides to take Issei so he can see how the group work. She explains the concept of Evil Pieces and how everyone is assigned a position. Kiba is the knight, Koneko the rook, and Akeno the queen. Rias is the king and Issei is a pawn, much to his annoyance! They quickly defeat the stray devil and Issei even gets the chance to impress Rias.

Once that is taken care of, Rias asks Issei to handle a summons for Koneko as she’s been overbooked. However, when he gets there something feels off. It’s the same feeling he had when he looked at the church. However, he goes in, determined not to fail Rias again. However, the person that summoned him is dead, cut into tiny pieces and Issei finds himself staring down an Exorcist. To make things worse, Asia is with him!

What did you think?

I love how dark and moody the first season feels, especially when you compare it to the latest season. Everything glows with an air of mystery. As far as this episode goes, it was fine. It took more time to introduce us to some of the mechanics of this world such as the Evil Pieces and Exorcists. We got some more rules about the church and how that fits with the devils. So, it might not have been as good as the previous ones but it was well worth watching.

Of course, the stray devil Viser was more than a little crazy and probably gave Issei whiplash with how quickly his view of the situation must have changed. It was also funny when Rias told him he was a pawn. Knowing the series, we know there’s more to it than that, but at this stage it was funny and his reaction was brilliant.

We also saw Asia’s ability to heal and while Issei’s reaction to it should have been more of a concern for her, I’ll let it go as it doesn’t really matter in the bigger picture. The strangest thing was that they left Asia behind with Freed and the Fallen Angels. I know they need Asia and Freed made it clear that he was told not to harm her, but Issei or Rias couldn’t have known that. Freed was ready to kill her or worst. He’s a real scumbag!
