High School DxD (Episode 7) – I Get a Familiar!

Issei and Asia are progressing well and are now ready to get a familiar to do all their grunt work. However, it would appear that Sona is ready to get familiars for the newer members of her clan. How will they decide who goes first?
High School DxD (Episode 7) – I Get a Familiar!
What happened?
It turns out that everyone in the Occult Research Club has a familiar other than Issei and Asia. Luckily, Rias believes that they are ready and is about to arrange for them to visit the Forest of Familiars and meet with the keeper. However, Sona arrives with her clan and reveals that she too intends to visit the forest. Unfortunately, only one clan can go per month. One will have to wait, but which one?
Their first attempt to resolve the conflict is with a tennis match. Rias and Akeno will play against Sona and Tsubaki. There is to be no magic usage… Well, that didn’t last long. After a couple of points, it turned into a fully-fledged war which was fine with the spectators who were being treated to a panty-shot bonanza! The game ended in a tie and with several broken rackets.
Next, they decided to play dodgeball and everyone would be involved. Issei was concerned that he was not a very good athlete so he made everyone matching headbands so they would feel like a team. It was a nice gesture, but it didn’t protect him from Sona’s magic-charged shot that followed him around the court until it slammed into his junk! Asia offered to heal him and the others dedicated the game to avenging Issei’s meat and two vegs. Amazingly, they won and were able to go to the forest. There, Asia found a rare familiar that took a liking to her. Issei wanted to choose a slime that dissolved clothing, but the girls vaporized it!

What did you think?
Where to begin? A lot happened in this episode compared to the previous two. We learnt about familiars (although, just like contracts, they too seem to disappear from existence soon after this episode is done) and how all devils have them. We saw Sona’s clan which was nice as we’d only seen Sona before now. Issei got himself a friendly rival in Saji, although they started off decidedly unfriendly.
Of course, the real fun began with the tennis match and then continued with the dodgeball game. Both were great and full of panty shots and various other ecchi tropes. I had to laugh when Issei was hit with the ball and then the others started talking about him and his little injury. They really go to town with the way everyone makes fun of Issei for being a pervert and frankly, it’s welcome.
Then, the scene in the Forest of Familiars was hilarious. Issei’s reaction to the sprite was amazing, although his desire to make the slime his familiar was too funny. Then, when the girls destroyed it, he practically broke down. Sounds like it would be easy enough to find another though as the keeper referred to it as a forest pest. As far as story development goes, there wasn’t any. This was focused mostly on developing parts of the world that are mostly never used again. Still, it was entertaining.
