High School DxD (Episode 5) – I Will Defeat My Ex-girlfriend!
What happened?
Asia appears to be in real trouble as a green glow dominates the altar where Raynare is working. Koneko and Kiba attack Raynare’s subordinates, creating an opening for Issei to try to save Asia. However, he gets there too late as the ritual has been completed. Raynare gives herself Twilight Healing, revealing that she going against many of her own kind by doing so. Pleased with how well Issei did, Raynare gives him Asia’s body although she is already at death’s door.
Outside, the other Fallen Angels taunt Rias and Akeno, believing that they have the battle already won. They even make fun of Issei and how Raynare deceived him and then tried to kill him. This makes Rias angry, and you wouldn’t like Rias when she’s angry. She’s not known as the Crimson Princess of Annihilation for nothing.
Kiba and Koneko give Issei a chance to run with Asia. Maybe if he can get her away from Raynare, he might be able to save her. However, with her sacred gear, it’s already too late for her. She dies in his arms. Raynare arrives and continues to taunt Issei, forcing him to activate his sacred gear. Issei channels his emotions into his sacred gear and punches Raynare out of the church. Kiba drags her back in where she tries to appeal to Issei’s softer side by becoming Yuuma again. He can’t be fooled, but he also can’t finish her off. Rias takes care of that and then adds Asia to her clan as a Bishop.
What did you think?
There were some pretty entertaining fights in her and both seemed to be focused on the antagonist mocking Issei. That was enough for Issei to lose his temper, which was already on the verge of going anyhow as Raynare killed Asia. Then, there was Rias losing it when the Fallen Angels made fun of Issei for believing Raynare’s deception. Clearly, the message here is not to upset devils…
We got to see Issei’s boosted gear power-up and reveal its true nature. That was cool and I also liked that we discovered that while Issei is a pawn, he used up all eight pieces. No doubt, this is to ensure that a devil’s clan cannot become too powerful. Sure, another clan may have more people, but none of them will be as strong as Issei, at least in potential.
I’m a little upset that in this episode we saw the end of Raynare (at least in reality) as she’s been a pretty good villain. Her deception of Issei is going to have a long-lasting impact on his psyche as she will no doubt plague his mind whenever he’s feeling insecure. She certainly went through the full range of emotions in this episode though as she went from comparing herself to a god to begging Issei to spare her. It was good that Issei couldn’t finish her off as well. It’s too soon for him to be making that sort of decision. Rias, however, will kill anyone that threatens her family!
