Ragna Crimson (Volume 11) – Heed Me, Time!

What happened?

Nebulim revealed to Borgius that he was not strong enough and that he would have to leave the protection of Ultimatia to him. Borgius was distraught that Nebulim had been defeated. He unleashed an ultimate attack that ripped Golem and Chimera to pieces. He then managed to break through Crimson’s barrier. Slime was destroyed in the process. Crimson was still trying to defeat Ultimatia but this was a troubling development. His salvation came from Chimera’s tail who was actually the previous winged monarch before Crimson. He took over Chimera’s broken body and unleashed his ultimate attack. It killed Borgius but destroyed Crimson’s barrier, allowing Ultimatia to escape.

However, Ultimatia’s only remaining ally was Woltekamui and he was thoroughly preoccupied with Ragna. Their attacks grew stronger and faster. Woltekamui remembered when he met the Clawed Monarch, Gilzea after he defeated one of her disciples. She killed him, but he came back. This seemed to entertain her so she allowed him to keep the sword that he had stolen and urged him to get stronger. There are those that even she could not defeat. During his fight with Ragna, Woltekamui reached a new level and quickly used it to cut Ragna’s head off. However, he too was not of the dying type.

Ragna decided to show Woltekamui his monarch-killing single-strike attack, however, he made it a double attack. Woltekamui has no way to stop it. Even Gilzea,. watching from afar, knew that he had lost. Ultimatia was alone and she was hurt. Crimson managed to summon the remains of Slime and got him to bring Greya with him. She carried Crimson’s gun to finish off Ultimatia, but it occurred to her that if she let Ultimatia rewind time she would see everyone that had died again. She wanted to see them all so badly, but she still pulled the trigger. Ultimatia died along with her bloodline.

What did you think?

I picked up this volume at an inopportune moment, thinking I would just read a couple of pages to see what happens. Well, the world be damned, I ploughed through the entire book. This was an epic conclusion to the Winged Bloodline arc. We learned more about Ultimatia and how she turned against the Soldarian Church. We saw how she turned hundreds of her copies against it too, but all were beheaded. We found out how Woltekamui met her and how they became so close. It did a great job of fleshing out these characters during the battles without losing the pacing. It also didn’t justify their actions and make them victims. They did what they did.

The only thing I’m not entirely clear on is how Ultimatia became a dragon monarch. She was visited by the dragon god from the future (much like how Ragna was) and then she was a dragon monarch with her own bloodline. I’m also hoping that we’ll get an explanation as to how Starlia and Ragna both managed to reattach their heads. I’m assuming it has something to do with the Silverine. I was also pleased to see that Starlia didn’t completely die. She’s in a coma and showing no signs of coming out of it, but there’s always a chance. Now, Crimson and Ragna are off to hunt the next bloodline. I’m absolutely loving this series, but now I have to wait for further books to be released…
