Sabikui Bisco (Episode 5) – Children’s Fortress
What happened?
Since the entrance to the mines was destroyed, they’ve had to change their plan. The new plan takes them across the Calvero Shellsand Sea, an inhospitable place. Bisco sees a watermelon and tries to grab it but some kid gets there first. He’s so desperate that he grabs the kid and is instantly fired upon by more children. He asks them for food, but they think he’s with Kurokawa. Bisco shows them his wanted poster and they agree to feed them if they can turn the over to the authorities and collect the reward.
Meanwhile, Pawoo is trying to track them down and gets a flat tire near an amusement park. She hears some screams and then sees two bodies. There are some survivors, but they are being attacked by a giant spider. Pawoo quickly kills it and is offered some tea and a place to fix her bike by the couple she saved.
Bisco and Milo are taken to Tetsujin Town which is populated entirely by children. Their parents went to make money so they could survive but never came back. Every year they are attacked by a shoal of blowfish where some of the kids are eaten. Milo helps the kids by curing a common illness that they had been told was Rust. It wasn’t Rust, but before they can celebrate, the blowfish arrive. Bisco breaks out of his cell and attacks.
The old couple attempted to poison and kill Pawoo, but she wasn’t as trusting as they would have hoped. She tries to stop them from hurting others, but they seal themselves in their bunker to escape from her. back in Imihama, Kurokawa captures Jabi.
What did you think?
All right, this one was pretty dark. The kids having to survive in a desert without any parents was a great start. Making it so that giant flying blowfish attacked at regular intervals so that they could eat children is taking it to another level altogether. Not to mention that they were being lied to by Kurokawa about the illness they had. I feel like that’s a precursor to the moment we find out Kurokawa has been lying to everyone about the Rust – the conspiracy theory I mentioned a couple of episodes ago.
At the apartment buildings where Pawoo found the old couple she rescued, there was a person who fell off the roof and hit the ground behind her, I noticed that he had a pill design on the back of his shirt which reminded me of Akira – the back of Kaneda’s biker jacket. Of course, Pawoo’s motorcycle is quite impressive if not nearly as stunning as Kaneda’s. So, when we met that old couple and they reminded me of the psychic children in Akira, I knew not to trust them. I wonder if there is a connection to Akira or if this is just a homage.
That old couple told Pawoo about a Mushroom Keeper that pretty much experimented on the town and ultimately killed everyone there but them. It’s looking more and more like Kurokawa is the Mushroom Keeper in question, especially as he knew how to find Jabi. It was odd, as Mushroom Keepers don’t need to get close to their target. They are basically snipers so unless Jabi wanted to get caught or find out something about Kurokawa, it was an odd move.
