Favourite Anime Couple (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 11

30 Days of Anime Year 1 to 5 The Otaku Author Favourite Anime Couple

Anime has more ships than the Spanish Armada… some real, some imagined, but they all make anime that much more entertaining. For day 11, I’ll be looking at my favourite anime couples. Can you feel the love?

Favourite Anime Couple (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 11

Lately, I’ve been watching more romance anime. Well, anything is more than nothing! For a while, I rarely watched romance. Having to suffer through the annual Christmas-themed rom-com was more than enough. However, since I’ve been broadening my horizons, I’ve found myself not only watching more romance anime but also enjoying it! I know! Shocking… Anyhow, romance or not, I’ve always enjoyed a good couple and anime has some amazing pairings. In fact, I’m pretty sure some of these will be surprising! Get ready to be wooed!

Year 1 – My First Girlfriend is a Gal (Season One)

No one could have guessed this one! Junichi and Yukana easily took the first year because I loved them. When I watched My First Girlfriend is a Gal I was expecting a fairly typical ecchi comedy. What I got, however, was a flashback to my teenage years. With only ten episodes, I still managed to get absolutely swept away by their relationship. There was the falling out and the failure to actually talk to one another. Then, the gallant recovery. I loved that all the characters were much more than their appearances. You really can’t judge a gal by her nail varnish!

Year 2 – Akame ga Kill! (Season One)

This should have been obvious if you’ve been following me for long. I loved the relationship between Tatsumi and Esdeath. They were like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet without all the killing… Alright, there was lots of killing! Anyhow, I loved that Tatsumi was exactly what Esdeath had her heart set on and the fact that he resisted and escaped just made her love him that much more. Of course, he tried to turn her to his side of the battle, but that was never going to happen. My favourite thing about them is that I think they both really liked each other despite everything. The ending still kills me when Esdeath froze herself with Tatsumi’s lifeless body before breaking into tiny pieces and scattering in the wind. Who says love is dead?

Year 3 – My Dress-Up Darling (Season One)

Where do I begin with Marin and Gojou? My Dress-up Darling has become one of my favourite series and the evolving relationship between them has been a huge part of it. I loved how Gojou set some boundaries early on about how he reserves certain words for when he truly feels that something is special. I knew that he would eventually use that word to describe Marin. The real question was whether she would realise and how she would react! She did, but he fell asleep soon after leaving her to go over what it meant in her head for a while. However, my favourite moment was in the Love Hotel when they almost kissed… damn that ringing phone! Anyhow, they were perfect together and brought the best out of each other.

Year 4 – Lycoris Recoil (Season One)

Were they or weren’t they a couple? I don’t really care. For me, Takina and Chisato in Lycoris Recoil were perfect together. There was a definite nod to Dirty Pair‘s Kei and Yuri with these two and not just with their designs. Anyhow, they fought for one another with every ounce of strength they could muster. They never gave up on one another, even when the thing that they had wanted all along was sitting there waiting for them. Their evolution was great too. Takina was thrown into the LycoReco organisation and had to adapt quickly. Thankfully, Chisato is the perfect mentor and partner to help her do that. I’m still desperately waiting for a second season. I need to see what happens to these two!

Year 5 – Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers (Season One)

Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers was delightfully wholesome, which may come as a surprise from an isekai where a guy is summoned from a fantasy world to a similar fantasy world and ends up living in a large house with a group of girls. Of course, it wasn’t like that. Flio and Rhy were a perfect couple, and by that, I mean that it wasn’t perfect. Things went wrong, but they tried their hardest and managed to make it work. Rys learned to cook so that she could do more for Flio. He wasn’t able to tell her how he felt until he almost lost her. Together, they took in a group of adventurers and helped them find purpose in their lives, but not in a judgemental way. Everything was just so easygoing and positive, and that was thanks to their approach to being a couple. This was an incredible series.

Final Thoughts!

So, did you guess any of my selections? It wasn’t an easy category to do as there were a lot of other contenders, and even some last-minute changes as I struggled to commit… Anyhow, like all the other posts so far, this process has been a lot of fun and made me really appreciate everything that I’ve been able to review. There is no time to rest as next, I will be looking at my Favourite Anime Protagonist. The 30 Days of Anime challenge continues tomorrow! Thanks for visiting.

  1. I didn’t mind LycoReco and Akame Kills having a romance subplot because the interaction makes sense that doesn’t come across as superficiality.

For the past year, it has become my important writing task to put a romance subplot (with the earliest chapters hinting of the encounter) as I wasn’t impressed with a certain popular series’ power couple liking each other that feels superficial to me. Writing my own one is the only way to vent my feelings so that I won’t be irked by it anymore in my next story arc where my couple meet for the first time.

    • Agreed. It needs to be part of the story and not just tacked on to fill the supposed need for a romance subplot. Many stories do just fine without one, so it really needs to be done well or else it can feel forced.

What did you think?
