Favourite Male Anime Character (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 27

After twenty-six days of my 30 Days of Anime challenge, it looks like we’ve finally arrived at the big ones. So, without further ado, here are my favourite male anime characters from the last five years.
Favourite Male Anime Character (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 27
I did consider skipping the so-called “best boy” and “best girl” categories since I had already selected my Favourite Protagonists, but then I decided to keep them. The main reason is that when I looked at the choices for my favourite male characters, I started to notice a trend. Without spoiling too much, it calls back to one of my favourite things to talk about and that is making characters resonate with the audience. Basically, I see a lot of myself in each of these characters. This could be the most revealing post yet!
Year 1 – Seiya Ryuuguuin – Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (Season One)
The main reason that I selected Seiya from Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is that we both have the same desire to be as prepared for something as possible. I do wonder if that’s one of the things that has been holding up my writing since I want to ensure that my book is the absolute best if can be before finishing it… Anyhow, I love how Seiya is not afraid to step back when he realises that he’s not going to win and how he will look for any opportunity to grow and strengthen his position. Seiya is a fascinating character and this series was great.

Year 2 – Futaro Uesugi – The Quintessential Quintuplets (Season One)
I think I already mentioned in another post how I was drawn to The Quintessential Quintuplets when I saw Futaro calculating the optimal food-to-money ratio at the school cafeteria. I’m not sure if it’s how I was raised or the Yorkshire blood running through my veins but I love a bargain, especially when buying food at a restaurant. On top of that, I love watching Futaro trying to herd cats as he attempts to get the quintuplets to study. I have two kids and that’s hard enough, but the similarities were pretty funny, especially as my kids are much younger than the quintuplets. I absolutely understand why he gets frustrated with them.

Year 3 – Lugh Tuatha Dé – The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat (Season One)
Lugh had lived a long life before he was killed. After years as the best assassin in the world, he was murdered as he was about to retire. Luckily, a goddess from another world had a need for his particular skills and set him up to be reincarnated into a new body. The reason that I select Lugh from The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat is not that I’m an assassin, although I certainly wouldn’t tell you if I was. No, what draws me to Lugh is how I see him taking full advantage of this new life. He’s starting a new life with his old memories and personality. We have young healthy bodies before our minds are ready to make the most of them and when our minds have finally developed our bodies are already past their prime. It is the tragedy of life!

Year 4 – Cid Kagenou – The Eminence in Shadow (Season One)
Cid Kagenou from The Eminence in Shadow has a very similar determination to Seiya from Cautious Hero. In fact, it was due to his attempts to get stronger that he ended up dying and being reborn into another world. Unlike Lugh, Cid was a teenager when he died so he didn’t have the benefit of a lifetime’s worth of experiences and knowledge. However, Cid certainly has a flair for exaggerating and making things up on the spot. We’re still waiting to see if he is changing the world with his words or whether the world is somehow using him to relay these messages. Either way, this show is excellent and Cid is a brilliant character, especially because we have no idea if he’s a reliable narrator or not.

Year 5 – Kazuma Satou – KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (Season Three)
If you were wondering why this entry isn’t Takashi Komuro from Highschool of the Dead it’s because I selected him as my favourite protagonist for Year Five since we are basically the same person. Since I’d already done that, this seemed like a perfect chance to highlight a character who I think has grown a lot since we first met him, while staying very much the same character… After three seasons, Kazuma is still Kazuma, which is great. He still makes bad decisions and gets himself into all sorts of trouble, but this season showed a different side to him. I loved how he stepped up to save Darkness, however, the moment that really made me sit up was when he told Megumin that he was afraid that he might screw things up so he was stuck trying to come up with a plan that would work. Admitting his concerns to Megumin was a huge moment for him and she instantly realised it. I love KonoSuba, and despite the criticism that I’ve seen aimed at the third season, I loved it just as much as the others.

Final Thoughts!
I ended up having a harder time selecting just five male anime characters than I thought I would. My appreciation of characters and looking for connections between myself and them no doubt made this more complicated. Now that I’m actively searching for connections, I’m seeing more and more, especially small ones that may seem insignificant, such as Futaro’s way with money. However, it’s those small details that often grab the audience. Seeing someone doing something that you do, especially when you may think that it’s unique to you can instantly pull you into a series.
If picking my five favourite male characters was tough, picking my five Favourite Female Anime Characters is going to be next to impossible. Don’t worry though, I will persevere and probably make some notes for potential future list posts of awesome female characters (possibly waifu-related, but not necessarily). There are only three posts left in my 30 Days of Anime challenge. It’s flown by! Anyhow, thanks for visiting.

I also enjoyed Lugh as a protagonist. I enjoyed Assassin a lot.
Yeah, it was a good show with an interesting premise. I hope we get another season because there’s obviously a lot more to the story.
