My First Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 1

30 Days of Anime Year 1 to 5 The Otaku Author My First Anime

It’s day 1 of my celebratory 30 Days of Anime challenge where I look back at the first five years of the Otaku Author. Let’s start things off easy with the first season I reviewed each year!

My First Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 1

So, this is the first category in the 30 Days of Anime which is a nice and easy way to get things going. However, I must first thank Merlin from Merlin’s Musings for planting the idea in my head. I love a good challenge and by doing this it should be a fun way to quickly look back at the last five years of the Otaku Author. I also decided to develop it to highlight many of the genres that I have explored. Of course, there will be more than just genre analysis as I also delve into characters, events, and many other ideas.

For day 1, I will be looking at “My First Anime”. This will be the first full season that I reviewed each year, with the year running from December 17 to December 16 the following year since I launched the Otaku Author on December 17, 2019. Anyhow, let’s get on with the selections!

Year 1 – Dr. Stone (Season One)

I watched Dr. Stone as it aired in 2019, originally covering the episodes on my old site. As I approached the end of the twenty-four episode season, I had already decided to start a new website with the Otaku Author branding. It was a crazy idea as it also involved creating new social media accounts and losing all of my existing SEO. Not to mention all my posts. I watched the final episode of the season on December 13 and decided that I would make this the first season that I covered here. Not only that, but I started things with a Dr. Stone takeover, publishing one episode review every hour for the first twenty-four hours. Exhilarating!

Year 2 – Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III (Season Three)

While the selection for year 1 was very deliberate, year 2 was completely down to chance. I started watching season three of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon as soon as it was released, and it just so happened that I finished watching it on December 18, 2020. The season review followed on December 30, making it the first season review of year 2. I’ve yet to watch the fourth and fifth seasons but I plan to do so in the near future.

Year 3 – Heaven’s Lost Property (Season Two) Forte

In year 3, I decided to revisit some older shows that I’d seen and loved but never got around to reviewing. One of those shows was Heaven’s Lost Property. Both of the movies were available and I hadn’t seen the second one so I wanted to really dive into the series to make the most of it. Despite the movies really failing to hit the spot, this series remains one of my favourites to this day. I love how it mixes surreal comedy and existential topics with ease. The review of season two was posted on December 21, 2021.

Year 4 – Sankarea: Undying Love (Season One)

During the fourth year of the Otaku Author, I decided to dive into the Sankarea: Undying Love manga series since I had already seen the anime. I hadn’t just seen it, however, as I did a series of collaboration posts with Yomu from Umai Yomu Anime Blog back on my old site. So, since I was going to review the manga, I decided to re-review the anime too. I also brought back the discussion posts that I hosted on my site while Yomu republished the one they had on their site too. There was a distinct Sankarea vibe to the Otaku Author towards the end of the year with the season review going live on December 25, 2022.

Year 5 – Overlord (Season One)

Over the five years of the Otaka Author, I’ve looked at seasonal shows as they aired and also revisited older shows that I either missed or didn’t review when I did watch them. Overlord was one of the latter. I initially watched the first three seasons in 2018, before this site existed. I also never reviewed any of them and since I loved the show, it was one that I really wanted to revisit. When I got around to rewatching it, I ended up binge-watching the first season in two days and was planning to just do a season review. However, the more I thought about it, the more I felt like I wanted to talk about it more. So, I rewatched it again and put together a series of episode reviews which took me to December 30, 2023, when the season review was published.

Final Thoughts!

Well, that was a fun trip down memory lane – a feeling I’m sure I’m going to be experiencing over and over again over the next twenty-nine days. I choose this category for the challenge because I like that it gives a random snapshot of what I’ve been up to over the years and isn’t influence by my feelings for the shows in question. Will I be more selective with the coming years? Only time will tell. Anyhow, come back tomorrow for the next caterogry – Most Nostalgic Anime! Thanks for visiting!

  1. Good luck with the 30-day anime challenge, I know you’ll breeze it. The sheer irony of this, I was actually planning on doing this a few months back as another blogger on medium inspired me, I ended up scrapping it though. It’s been years since I last saw anyone doing this, would be nice if peeps tried it out again

    • The last time I did one was before I made the switch to this site, however, this is more of a retrospective of five years of the Otaku Author in the form of a 30 day challenge. I’ve tailored the questions to suit my needs. Should still be fun though. So, thanks!

  2. You are inspiration to others who want write and show people what they feel through their writing. My first anime was Naruto.

    • Thanks. You’re too kind. I need to find the time to watch Naruto, so thanks for reminding me.
