Weirdest Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 22

30 Days of Anime Year 1 to 5 The Otaku Author Weirdest Anime

Let’s be honest for a second here, anime gets away with a lot of weird shit! Like it’s absolutely insane. Of course, that’s also why we love it! Here are five of the weirdest anime that I watched over the last five years!

Weirdest Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 22

I remember watching Project A-ko and Ultimate Teacher when they were released and realising that I had found my home. Both of those shows were amazingly bizarre, but the humour resonated with me. It made me search for more and more crazy shows to see if it was a one-off or whether there was more like it. Thankfully, there was more… much more! Anyhow, I couldn’t celebrate five years of the Otaku Author without highlighting some of the crazy ideas that I’ve been exposed to. Hold onto something because this is going to be wild!

Year 1 – Chio’s School Road (Season One)

I massively regret not doing episode reviews of Chio’s School Road. There would be so much to talk about, and all of it would be brilliantly ridiculous. The premise of this anime is that we are following Chio as she travels to and from school. What happens at school is of no concern because all the good stuff happens on the commute. She instils fear in a group of bikers, walks the walls like a cat, reenacts video games with her friend, and even learns about Kabaddi. There’s even a scene where they all go commando after learning that one of their friends is a nudist once she gets home. There is nothing normal about this anime and I love it for that.

Year 2 – Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid (Season One)

I mentioned Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid in my favourite ecchi anime post, but it has to be brought up here too. There’s a virus that makes girls turn into weapons when they get horny. One girl turns into a sword, another a motorbike. One girl even becomes a giant. Of course, these weapons can only be used by another girl with a different variant of the virus. So, as a power struggle for the island ensues there are girls kissing and groping one another in the hopes of activating their partner’s weaponised form. I don’t know how this series got past the brainstorming stage, but I’m glad that anime is a place where anything can happen. ANYTHING!!!

Year 3 – Takt Op. Destiny (Season One)

I have to give Takt Op. Destiny credit for coming up with a very strange idea and following through despite it really not working for me as a story. It’s basically a magical girl story but it’s musical symphonies that turn into girls and are commanded by conductors who sacrifice an arm during the battle. Oh, and they are battling aliens who hunt down music. Play a piano or whistle a tune and these things will find you. Or so they made out at the beginning of the series. This series was flat and dull, which seems like an odd thing for a series about musical magical girls. Interesting idea, terrible execution.

Year 4 – My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog (Season One)

My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog is peak weird! A high school boy wakes up to discover that he has been transformed into a small dog. Then, his crush finds him and takes him home, adopting this poor stray. That sounds crazy, but with interesting potential. Then, Inukai takes the dog, who she has called Pucci, into the bath with her… Things get crazier and crazier from there and surprisingly, Pucci pretty much gives up on becoming a human again because he doesn’t want to upset her by making her lose another dog. Dogs have a much shorter lifespan than humans. Is he really all right with that? Anyhow, this series is nuts and has to be seen to be believed… or understood… That said, some moments were so funny that I laughed so hard, that I woke up my dog. It’s a dog’s life!

Year 5 – My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! (Season One)

My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! didn’t necessarily have anything quite as weird as some of the other shows mentioned and while its title is ridiculous, that’s not why I’ve chosen it. There were actually some good moments and the story did pull you in. However, it jumped around so much. It was as if they were trying to squeeze every single trope or idea into one series that made things become quite tiring. Of course, that is exactly what this series was going for as it is most definitely a parody of the overpowered protagonist Isekai craze. Yogiri is so powerful that he can kill instinctively if someone attempts to kill him regardless of whether he can see them or not. You’d think it would get boring, but the overuse of him just saying “die” and people dropping down dead just seemed to get funnier and funnier.

Final Thoughts!

I love that anime is daring enough to try just about anything. You really don’t see that sort of bravery or experimentation in Western media, especially as shows seem to get cancelled too often and before they’ve even been given a chance. That’s definitely one of the reasons that I’m sticking with anime and manga. There’s more freedom to experiment. No topic is off limits and no idea is too weird. I hope that continues despite the popularity of anime overseas.

In the spirit of experimentation, I’m going from weird to chilled as tomorrow I’ll be revealing the five Most Chilled Anime from the last five years of the Otaku Author. You’re going to want to be sitting… I mean lying down for these. Let’s take things real easy! Thanks for visiting.

  1. Chio’s School Road was/is top-tier entertainment. I LOVED that show. My husband and I still go around saying “Bloody Butterfly” at each other lol. It is also where we learned about kabaddi and then not too long after, they actually had a kabaddi anime which was hilarious as well.

    • I’ve not seen the kabaddi anime but will have to find it. That sport is hilarious, but also surprisingly fun. We played it on a beach in France while on a rugby tour… but, yeah, Chio is awesome.

What did you think?
