Favourite Harem Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 25

30 Days of Anime Year 1 to 5 The Otaku Author Favourite Harem Anime

This could get quite polarizing… I like harem anime. There! I’ve said it so I guess I had better defend my corner by revealing my favourite harem anime from the last five years of the Otaku Author.

Favourite Harem Anime (30 Days of Anime – Years 1 to 5) – Day 25

I thought that I would start with the definition of a harem when referring to anime. Basically, it’s when there are many women who are interested in one guy. Technically, that’s it. He doesn’t have to be interested or interact with any of them, but that’s often not the case. So, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s just dive head-first into this collection of collections of beautiful women! Don’t blame me, I didn’t invent the genre…

Year 1 – How Not to Summon a Demon Lord (Season One)

As with most harem anime, things could get messy if the protagonist wasn’t such a wet lettuce. In How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, Diablo is that wet lettuce. He’s a gamer who was summoned to a world similar to the game world he was playing in and he’s retained all of his items and powers. Of course, he’s still a scared gamer at heart so the girls falling all over him just end up leaving him completely flustered. Luckily, the girls are all pretty awesome. Season one alone gave us 1. Shera, 2. Edelgard, 3. Rem, and 4. Alicia. There were also several other girls who had minor roles that could and probably would be expanded upon. This is a fun series that doesn’t take itself too seriously while also taking the time to develop the characters and make their interactions feel believable, even as crazy as they are sometimes.

Year 2 – The Quintessential Quintuplets (Season One)

The Quintessential Quintuplets is a slightly less typical harem anime in that we know that the protagonist, Futaro will end up marrying one of the five sisters. So, as much as this is a harem anime, it’s also a mystery anime as we try to work out which one it will be. Of course, they all end up falling for him through various interactions and some start out being incredibly frosty towards him. I loved how different all the girls were despite all looking the same. After watching the first season, I had them ranked as follows – 1. Mika, 2. Ichika, 3. Itsuki, 4. Yotsuba, and 5. Nino. The second season kind of threw everything into the air and now when I look back, I’m not sure I can decide which is my favourite anymore. Futaro has got his work cut out trying to fall in love with just one of them.

Year 3 – Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory (Season One)

Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory has a crazy cast of girls which ends up making this series a lot of fun. Poor Koushi doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into, however, not dying on the streets makes this an infinitely more preferable scenario. Despite the wild antics from all of the girls, there was a lot of heart to this series, and not just because they saved his life. He also managed to help each of them with their own issues, which they then repaid to him once more. My rankings for this series are 1. Kiriya, 2. Mineru, 3. Atena, 4. Frey, and 5. Serene, although all of them were hilarious in their own ways.

Year 4 – High School DxD (Season One)

Let’s be honest here, Rias and Akeno would be more than enough for anyone, let alone adding Koneko and Asia to the mix. There were also several fallen angels that added plenty more steam to the series – Raynare and Kalawarner come to mind. Not to mention some of their opponents in the ratings game and even fellow students from another demon family. Basically, High School DxD is probably the harem anime most people think of when someone says harem anime. Now, I enjoyed the first season, although it didn’t thrill me as much the second time I watched it. It’s good, but I think there are better ones around

Year 5 – Highschool Of The Dead (Season One)

Basically, it had to be Highschool of the Dead and I’m going to give you five reasons why… 1. Saeko Busujima, 2. Rei Miyamoto, 3. Saya Takagi, 4. Shizuka Marikawa, and 5. Rika Minami. I think I might have mentioned it before, but I love this series and everyone in it. Saeko is my number one anime waifu so unfortunately, no other show stood a chance this year. I’m already excited for my next rewatch and at some point, I’m going to review the manga. I did it once before on my old site and since it goes beyond the anime and a second season is incredibly unlikely (sob) it seems like the right thing to do. yeah, more Saeko!

Final Thoughts!

As you can see, there are very different types of harem anime. Some have all the girls actively pursuing the guy and that always ends up going hilariously wrong for him and some are more subtle. Sometimes, the guy doesn’t even notice that all these incredible women are falling for them. I love the absurdity of it. That said, I’m quite happy to keep all the extra waifu in two dimensions. Who needs that sort of headache?

This category is the last of the genre-based categories which means we’ve arrived at the final five posts in my 30 Days of Anime challenge. Next up, I’ll be looking at my five favourite fights. This goes beyond series as I’ll pinpoint the exact fight. Everybody was kung-fu fighting… Thanks for visiting.
