What happened?
Impressed by her cooking skills, Anastasia decided to set up a stall and sell her cooking to adventurers. Admittedly, her initial stall is very low level, but with her cooking, it’s only a matter of time before it levels up. Many of the people who tried her steaks the other day have come back to see what else she has going. However, their discussion is cut short when an owl shoots through the sky, leaving a notice of an impending World Quest. This is an in-game event that could change the trajectory of the overarching story. Surprisingly, it’s happening at Beginning Town. An army of goblins, thousands strong has begun its march towards them. All adventurers in the city have been enlisted and assigned a role to play in their attempt to protect the town.
To Anastasia’s surprise, she had been selected as the Supreme Commander. Everyone headed to the location on the map outside of town and prepared for war. Anastasia met with her commanders and attempted to come up with a strategy. However, they knew nothing of what they were facing, which made things hard. Anyhow, she seemed to be doing all right as the two armies clashed. As the battle progressed, she had to decide whether to include the NPCs in their army, give orders to take out a group of goblins on flying bugs that had targetted her, and prepare to face the Goblin General. Once the Goblin General’s HP had been reduced significantly, it charged straight at Anastasia. She hit it with several long-range strikes, further weakening it. Her Commanders assisted her, but ultimately, she took it down with a powerful attack. They won the World Quest and protected the town, earning an S-Rank victory. With that other with, Anastasia returned to her stall to work on her cooking skills.
What did you think?
There was a lot more action in this volume with almost every page dedicated to the World Quest and it was a lot of fun. I worry for humanity if a full-dive MMORPG like this ever becomes available. No one is going to do anything else. I may have avoided World of Warcraft because I knew that I would spend way too much time on it, but I don’t think I would be able to resist something as incredible as this. Back to the story, while this volume didn’t quite capture the excitement that hit me with the first volume it was a big step back towards that. Anastasia is proving to be a fun protagonist who is determined to do things her way. When the commanders suggested that they form a strong party and take on difficult quests, Anastasia declined because she wanted to focus on levelling up her cooking skills. Part of me was disappointed, but as many people commented in the story, it was so like her to do that.
As long as we get more and more World Quests or similar that force everyone into a bit of action, it’ll make the slower more relaxed moments that much better. I am enjoying the interaction between all the players, but the war was definitely a lot of fun. It was interesting to see everyone’s reactions to Anastasia. I laughed at one point when she masterfully held off a squad of poisoned goblins and the commanders just stood there admiring her skills. She had to remind them to help her. We’re already seeing the benefits of her focused grinding in the catacombs so I can’t help but wonder how her determination to level up her cooking will turn out. There’s going to be a huge payoff at some point and I’m looking forward to seeing what that is.
