In the Land of Leadale (Episode 12) – Relocating, Building, Flying, and the Earth

Cayna recovered from the welcome party and found out that the villagers had gifted her a piece of land. With that settled, guess they should have another party to celebrate. I foresee a lot of parties in Cayna’s life!
In the Land of Leadale (Episode 12) – Relocating, Building, Flying, and the Earth
What happened?
The welcome party was brutal and Cayna could still feel it at noon the next day when she woke. Luka brought her a cup of water while Roxilius and Roxine argued about who’s fault it was. That’s when Lytt came in and told Cayna her mother had good news for her. Well, the villagers were so happy that Cayna was moving in that they gifted her a large piece of land for her to build her house on. Once she had accepted it was time to celebrate.
The next day, around noon once more, Cayna woke with another hangover. After another cup of water and listening to the Roxilius and Roxine squabbling, Cayna got up and built a house using her magic. It didn’t take long and looked quite impressive. Not long after the villagers arrived to help and since they didn’t need to do anything, they might as well have another party.
Cayna sat on her porch watching Lytt and Luka play as she drank a cup of tea. She explained to Roxine that she had been in the hospital for a long time and all she had been able to do was play Leadale. It was the only place she could play and run. She pondered her life and believed that this must be what happiness felt like. Luka then gave Cayna a crown made out of flowers and called her mom for the first time.

What did you think?
I said that the last episode felt like the end and this episode just confirmed it. Literally, nothing in this episode was needed. Everything that we were shown had been pretty much implied in the previous episodes and while it was funny seeing Cayna go through the hangover groundhog day scenario it wasn’t that funny. It feels like a bit of a letdown after what seemed to be a promising start. At least we found out a little more about Cayna back on Earth, although I’d guessed pretty much all of it from the previous hints.

What have you learnt?
This was the unneeded part two of the wind-down for this series and it’s made it quite clear that sometimes, you can just end things where they are. We didn’t need this episode, although I’m sure there will be those that enjoyed it as they were probably here for the slice of life side of the story, although I’m still not convinced this story knew exactly what it was.
I’ve not really seen padding at the end of a series before so this is a new experience, and I didn’t really like it. I can’t think of a single thing that wasn’t addressed in the last episode. We had a rundown of Cayna’s experiences and saw all the characters one more time. We learnt that the mermaid was happy so why did we need to do all of that again? Was it just to confirm what we might have suspected? If that’s the case, I think it shows a lack of faith in the audience. It’s like a comedian explaining the punchline after telling the joke… Please don’t do that!
