In the Land of Leadale (Episode 9) – Another Visit, a Mermaid, a Misunderstanding, and Zombies
What happened?
Lytt was delighted to see that Cayna had returned. There was even a room waiting for her in the inn and to celebrate her return, they were going to have a huge party. Of course, Cayna woke up the next day around noon with a hangover. That was when she found the villagers standing near the well talking about something. It turned out there was a strange sound coming from the well and it was creeping them out. Cayna volunteered to check it out and summoned a couple of water spirits to guide her.
Deep inside the well, she found a mermaid, Mimily who was lost and had no way to get back home. Cayna invited her to stay at the village and since the villagers were fine with it, Mimily settled into the public baths. It was time for Cayna to hit the road once more, although she promised to take Lytt flying when she returned. Cayna had another tower to check out and since Shining Saber was leading his knights to defeat the bandits, she tagged along.
Cayna was about to summon a ride when Shining Saber scooped her up and placed her on his lap, offering her a ride. He didn’t realise until it was too late what he had done. Cayna was embarrassed and it just got worse as the knights assumed she was Shining Saber’s girlfriend. Thankfully, Cayna can cook and was able to lift the spirits of the knights who continued to tease Shining Saber. Before parting ways, Cayna gave him a cooking skill so that he could feed his soldier well. She approached the fishing village near to the location of the tower and found it blanketed in fog which gave her an ominous feeling.
What did you think?
I think this show is best when there are other players for Cayna to interact with. The whole time she was with Shining Saber was hilarious and while that was mostly down to his knights teasing him, the mood was generally pretty uplifting. Cayna’s reaction to being carried like a princess was pretty funny too, especially when she pinched his arm with her monstrous grip strength.
While the mermaid scene was nice, I can’t help but think it will end up being important at some point. Otherwise, it was a fairly mundane scene that didn’t really do much. Of course, the big win in this episode was the introduction of zombies and Cayna trying to remember the name of the horror movie which heavily featured fog… I wonder what it could be? Maybe, The Fog?!
What have you learnt?
One thing that this series has got me thinking about is the fact that this doesn’t feel like one long cohesive story. It has a lot of parts that will no doubt eventually build towards the overall picture, but in reality, a lot of the scenes and episodes have been small segments that could have been dropped in any order. I wonder how this works in the light novel. Is each book a scene or series of smaller stories?
I tend to enjoy short stories and love that it when they fit together to make a bigger picture. I may have to look into the light novels so that I can see how they pull them together. Whether it is like the anime where Cayna kind of just wanders around doing things here and there. It doesn’t make it sound that interesting, but the series has had some good moments that should keep you reading. There are also lots of questions that need answering so that will pull the reader along.

I’ve been watching this one and I do hope that this disjointed storytelling does culminate to something bigger. Otherwise, I am going to be quite annoyed LOL
Yeah. My worry is we’ll get to the end of the season and not have any of the bigger questions answered or feel like there’s been much in the way of progress. Hopefully, that won’t be the case.
