What happened?

The man that had been injured was a mercenary that had been hired to protect a merchant’s caravan. They had been attacked by ogres and it wasn’t looking good. Luckily, Cayna was able to analyze the situation and activated a dual spell, allowing her to nullify the poison and heal his wounds simultaneously. As a reward, the merchant agreed to tell her everything he could to get her up to speed after being absent for two hundred years.

She discovers that her son, Skargo is in the capital and everyone has heard of him. They are shocked to learn that she is his mother. The merchant agrees to take Cayna with him, but before she leaves she gives Lytt a hairpin and tells her that she is the witch that lives in the tower and makes her promise not to tell anyone. In the capital, Cayna attempts to visit Skargo but is told she needs an appointment. However, she manages to find her other son, Kartatz by chance and learns that her daughter, Mai-Mai is the headmistress of a university. Cayna also signs up as an adventurer as a way to learn more about the world.

What did you think?

I mentioned in the first episode that I was getting some BOFURI vibes from the OP. Well, this episode shifted a little and left me feeling more like I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level. I think it will probably end up in a similar vein and judging by how it’s going they could very well have been set in the same world. It’s undoubtedly going to be a pretty easygoing series with fun adventures and cute moments.

I’ve been watching and reviewing a lot of isekai anime lately and I love how varied they can be. Sure, there’s often a number of similarities, but there is a lot of freedom that comes with this sort of series. People seem to talk about the oversaturation of isekai anime, but I don’t see it. When you can put this in the same category as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, it shows that the genre is incredibly flexible. I don’t see there being an end to the wave.

What have you learnt?

One of the elements that I like about this series is that the world is familiar to Cayna but also very different to how she knew it. I think that helps to limit her reactions to the idea that she died and found herself in this world. If it had been a completely new world, I would have expected her to be more animated about it. Of course, it also helps to explain why she’s so overpowered. She was so in the game and it seems like the world has regressed a little in terms of magic so she’s even stronger.

Finally, it wouldn’t be an isekai anime if the protagonist didn’t join an adventurer’s guild. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t have the usual appraisal of skills moment which would have resulted in the shock at just how powerful she is. I’m sure we’ll get to see many more overpowered moments though so I’m sure I’ll survive. As with any genre, you don’t have to use all the tropes, you just need enough to keep it familiar and meet the audience’s expectations.

    • Thanks. Real life is crazy enough at the moment. I can’t seem to get enough of these chilled Isekai/fantasy stories. It all started with BOFURI!

  1. I got the same “Killing Slimes” vibe as you did.

I’ve been thinking about it and I believe the reason isekais are dominating anime is that they represent second chances. So and so’s life sucks, they die, and now they have a great life. A lot of people have sucky lives right now.

The best isekai show the person still feeling the scars and pain of the old life as they slowly adapt to their new reality. Other isekai has the character using their advanced technical knowledge from their old life to dominate in the new one.

Some isekai are really just a standard adventure with an isekai element tacked on the beginning to fit the niche and appeal to people with sucky lives. The previous life is never an important element agin. They can be great shows but they only minimally qualify as isekai. I think “Killing Slimes,” (which I really enjoyed) “Reincarnated as a Slime,” (which I also enjoyed) and (so far) “Leadale” all fall into this category.

    • Absolutely, it’s the ultimate form of escapism. It’s not just the new life, but the fact that you cut out the crap instantly. There’s no having to break off bad relationships or quit crappy jobs. It’s done, now get on with your new wonderful life where you can learn from your mistakes of the past.

I agree about the past life being relevant in the new life. With shows like Mushoku Tensei, his past life is all too present in the new one, complete with all his regrets and hang ups.

There are definitely some that could have and probably should have just been fantasy stories without the reincarnation/summoning side of things. However, that makes it easy to explain the new rules. Someone that had always lived there wouldn’t need to have someone explain how things work. It is lazy exposition, but it is easier and with usually only twelve episodes, they need to get on with things.

Previous, I was always focused on darker shows, but since the pandemic started, I’ve watched a lot more relaxed shows. Even some of the sports anime has been a nice change of pace. There’s so much that does suck at the moment that’s it’s nice to be able to just enjoy these shows without the tension and worry.
