Lycoris Recoil (Episode 5) – So far, so good
What happened?
Matsushita’s wife and child were killed by an assassin many years ago. Since then, he’s been living in the United States of America. He has a condition that makes it impossible for him to move and talk, but he has a wheelchair that he can control. He’s left the destinations ups to Chisato and she’s planning on showing him everything. They take him to the shrines and the festival and he seems to be having a great time. However, Kurumi spotted an assassin tailing them and sent Mizuki to intercept.
Jin won’t be stopped that easily. He destroyed Kurumi’s drone and then captured Mizuki, although she did manage to get a tracking device on him. She sends out another drone and warns Taknina and Chisato about what’s happening. Jin ambushes Takina and tries to take her out, leaving Chisato to look after Matsushita. Unfortunately, he disappears when her back is turned. When she finds him, he reveals that he knows Jin is coming for him. He tells Chisato that he wants Jin dead.
Chisato leaves Matsushita with Mizuki and runs to help Takina. It doesn’t take her long to defeat Jin, but she refuses to kill him. Suddenly, Matsushita’s chair powers down. He’s dead. Mika questions Jin who reveals that he didn’t kill Matsushita’s family and was only recently hired to kill him. That’s when they discover that Matsushita doesn’t exist. The man in the chair was a guy that went missing from the hospital and was in a drug-induced coma. Someone was controlling him remotely, but what were they trying to achieve?
What did you think?
This episode was so good. Like really good. We learnt that Chisato has an artificial heart which is a huge piece of information to causally drop in like that. That’s how you do backstory. Give us a detail that demands to be explained. When we finally get the full story, we’re going to be so hungry for it, there’s no way it’ll disrupt the flow of the story. Of course, that was almost overshadowed by the fake Matsushita. Someone was rolling a dead guy around and pretending he was alive. That’s grim. At least in Weekend at Bernie’s, it was a dark comedy.
And then, we saw Majima again and this time, he assassinated a Lycoris in a particularly brutal fashion. He’s starting to feel a little like the Joker in that he seeks to create chaos because there is an absence of it. It’s not a bad thing, but I would have preferred that there was an actual reason behind his actions. Maybe, that’ll be revealed when we find out about Chisato’s heart. Either way, this was a fantastic episode and the interactions between Takina and Chisato were once more outstanding.
