Mieruko-chan (Episode 3) – She Still Sees Them
What happened?
After a particularly disturbing bus ride, Miko arrives at the coffee shop where she’s meeting Hana. However, Hana isn’t there yet and a cute guy just sat opposite her. Well, he thinks he’s cute and so does the ghost that’s following him around. Unfortunately, the ghost doesn’t like Miko looking at her man and creeps toward her. Miko manages to pull up a video of professional wrestling on her phone and convinces the ghost that her man isn’t Miko’s type.
Hana arrives and Miko wants to leave, but the cute boy talks to her. Miko blows him off just as his actual girlfriend arrives who is followed around by a group of ghosts all desperate to be her boyfriend. After Hana gets a drink they head to a shop where Miko buys four sets of prayer beads and Hana gets another stuffed bunny. After thinking about what happened to Hana, Miko gives her two sets of prayer beads.
Hana decides to thank her by buying her a butt bun! Apparently, it’s like eating a bum! Anyhow, they just need to walk through this sketchy-looking alley. One tall ghost steps toward Miko and her prayer beads explode. When Hana is about to come back, Miko walks through the ghost. Hana takes her to a stall with a fortune teller to get some good beads…

What did you think?
I loved this episode. The bus ride was particularly unsettling as that girl said the exact words the ghost had been saying. That can’t be a coincidence. Does that mean, she will become that ghost and are ghosts somehow out of time? Also, the idea that there may be ghosts following people around for whatever reason is brilliantly creepy, especially if they have a crush on you!
However, it was the scene with the fortune teller that really caught my eye. She could see that Miko was being troubled by things she could see but couldn’t explain and realised that she was trying to ignore them. Then, when she looked at Hana and we saw that she is glowing with spiritual energy that likely attracts the ghosts, even if it protects Hana. That means she’s at least partially responsible for all the crazy shit Miko has seen. Why Miko can see them is another question!
