Mieruko-chan (Episode 5) – She Sees Them, Too
What happened?
Yuria follows Miko for a couple of days and sees a lot of strange events. It’s as if Miko can see the ghosts but has made an art form out of pretending they aren’t there. To anyone else, she might appear completely normal. Excited to finally find someone else who can see ghosts, Yuria asks Miko to help her put away the gym equipment. There she questions her and even arranged for some of the tiny old men to appear.
Unfortunately, Yuria is not as strong a medium as Miko and doesn’t notice the other ghost which is far larger and more terrifying. It starts asking if they can see it, but Miko is still pretending she can’t see anything. Yuria is getting more annoyed and keeps saying she can see the tiny old men, but that makes the big ghost assume she can see it. It goes wild. Miko’s only option is to choke Yuria until she passes out… When she wakes, Miko apologises and tells her to pretend she didn’t see anything.
Hana makes Miko go shopping on the way home which means Miko is walking home late. She sees a ghost on a set of stairs and tries to walk past, but it grabs her. That’s when Miko realises it’s just a lost old lady so she carries her home. The old lady’s husband recently died and since then, she’s lost her memory. Her daughter wants to thank Miko and runs inside to get something.
That’s when a ghost appears and it’s chanting a number at Miko and the old lady. Still pretending not to see it, Miko puts the number into her phone and shows the old lady. She wanders into her house and heads straight to a safe. The daughter tells her she’ll never remember the combination, but she doesn’t have to! With the safe unlocked, the old lady finds a comb from her husband and with it regains her memories. The ghost appears behind Miko once more and thanks her.

What did you think?
It was another great episode. I’m loving the mix of humour and touching stories. The part where Yuria confronted Miko was hilarious, especially as Miko continues to pretend she can’t see anything. I still can’t believe she choked her to save her from the big angry ghost. Then, the talk that Miko gave to her once she had woken up was great. It could have easily been taken the wrong way, which is exactly how Yuria took it.
Finally, the scene with the old woman was brilliant. I realised what the ghost was doing straight away and that told you pretty much who it was, but that didn’t make it any less special. It’s great that the ghosts are so varied and some have an actual purpose or goal they are trying to achieve much like Miko’s father. I’m looking forward to seeing how Yuria gets fully integrated into the group and if either of them will realise Hana’s power!
