Mieruko-chan (Episode 1) – Can You See Them?

Miko Yotsuya’s life just became very strange. All of a sudden, she can see ghosts, however, they don’t know that she can see them so if she pretends she can’t they lose interest and disappear. Easy enough, right?

What happened?

On the way home from school, Miko Yotsuya noticed that her new bag doll had fallen off. She retraced her steps back to the classroom and found it under the teacher’s desk. It was dark and spooky, but even so, Miko couldn’t help but feel like something else was going on. She hurried to the bus stop to get home and messaged Hana to let her know what happened. Then, an image she sent to Hana came back to her phone over and over again, each time distorting a little until it became so grotesque that Miko dropped her phone.

When she picked it up, the images had gone. However, there was now a giant ghost towering over her, its guts hanging from its belly. It leant towards her and asked her if she could see him. Inside, Miko was screaming, but she managed to remain calm and pretended that she couldn’t see the ghost. After a while, it disappeared, leaving Miko to freak out. She saw another in her bathroom and then in her bed. What was going on?

What did you think?

This episode was fantastically creepy and also hilarious. It did a great job of building the tension by putting Miko in dark and deserted settings and then flashing a shadow past or something similar. It kept building too which made the moment that the first ghost appeared that much more shocking. But then, it asked her if she could see it. Miko has iron nerves to be able to pretend like it wasn’t there. I don’t know if I could have managed that.

It got better with the ghost in the bathroom and then finally, the one under her sheets in her bed would have been the moment I would have gone “nope, this ain’t happening. I’m out of here.” It was hilarious watching it happen to someone else though, and her reaction was a large part of that. I get the sense, we’re going to see just how much Miko can take before she completely freaks out. It was a great start. I’m looking forward to more.
