Mieruko-chan (Episode 4) – Yep, She Sees Them

What happened?

Miko finds her favourite pudding at the convenience store and takes it home for later. That evening, she stays up late with her brother to watch a scary show, but something is a little too real for Miko so she leaves to get some drinks. Unfortunately, she runs into some more ghosts. First, it was a tiny old man who she thought was cute. However, after following him, she found out how not cute it really was. Luckily, a crow stole her coin, giving her a chance to run after it.

Kyousuke, Miko’s younger brother is concerned that she’s acting weird and is afraid it might be a boyfriend. He follows her after school to a book shop. She’s trying to look up occult things that might help her, but he thinks she was ready 99 Ways to Please You Lover! His only clue to finding out the truth will be if she had a hickey.

Miko gets in the bath and is pleased to be able to relax, however, that doesn’t last long as a ghost emerges in the bathroom. She wants to leave, but can’t run out without giving away that she can see them. Luckily… if you will… Kyousuke bursts in to look for hickeys, which gives Miko the chance to not be alone with the ghost by offering to wash his back.

The next morning, Miko comes down to breakfast to find a giant hairy ghost occupying the room with her family. Kyousuke asks if the pudding is hers and tells her to put her name on it after what happened last time when her father ate it. She leaves when the ghost licks her food, but before getting out the door, she runs back and grabs the pudding, leaving it at her father’s shrine!

What did you think?

This episode appeared to be pretty funny at first, but then it got serious and showed what Miko must be going through. The scene in the bathroom was particularly tense and I felt awful for Miko as she tried to leave without having to expose herself to the ghost (in more than one way.) Bizarrely, her brother bursting in saved her.

Then, this series did something that I wasn’t expecting. It pretty much Sixth Sensed us with the revelation that her father was dead. All those times we’d seen him, he was a ghost and only Miko could see him. However, she couldn’t acknowledge him without revealing to all ghosts that she could see them. That was beautifully tragic. It was done in such a way that he seemed to be interacting with the rest of the family, but in reality, he was just there, tacking on a comment. Then, he apologised to her for eating her pudding, but she couldn’t acknowledge him. It was such a sad moment. This series is far more than just goofy ghost jokes.
