Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! (Episode 11) – Does Sakurai Want to Hang Out, Too?

What happened?

Sakurai’s apartment is full of crap that Uzaki has left there. This time, he’s going to make her clean up, but when she arrives, she’s carrying a giant frog beanbag and it comes with a cute smaller beanbag. All right, they can stay, but the rest has got to go. After cleaning up, Sakurai realises she’s left more stuff in the fridge. He soon shuts up when he sees that she was planning on cooking for him. At the cafe, Akihiko asks Sakurai if he can help in the kitchen. They could use another pair of hands. Let’s just say he can’t cook and leave it at that…

In an attempt to improve, Sakurai has a cooking lesson from Uzaki’s mother. She’s surprised that she can talk to him as long as his gaze is not directly on her. While they wait for the udon dough to rise, she goes off to do some laundry, but when she gets back, she hears Sakurai and Uzaki talking about petting. She believes that they are after her again but goes in to set them straight.

One evening, Sakurai was about to settle in for some solo karaoke when he sees Ami and Uzaki staring into the room with massive grins on their faces. He’s horrified to think that they almost saw him singing. In an effort to make him feel better, Ami and Uzaki head off and come back in full cosplay. He seems a little uncomfortable so they chance into even more revealing cosplay. Then, when he accidentally says he prefers the bunny girl costume, Sakurai is ready for the floor to open up and swallow him. The next day, Uzaki shows up at her door, standing in the rain. She tells him that she can’t hang out with him anymore…

What did you think?

This episode highlighted the reason that a number of smaller scenes work so well in this style of storytelling. There were probably four segments – cleaning his apartment, cooking, climbing, and karaoke. All were pretty good and actually fit together nicely with some good transitions. However, the karaoke scene clearly stole the limelight and will no doubt be the one that is remembered more. And for good reason. It was hilarious. It wasn’t just Sakurai dealing with being found. Then, he had to deal with two drunk girls who were determined to make him feel uncomfortable. They appeared to be having a great time, by the way.

So, having a number of smaller scenes increases the chance that something will stick with the audience. If you’re lucky, there will be those that will like different scenes best. As long as they liked one scene the others will kind of disappear into the background. If you have just one long scene like the last episode, there’s a chance that it won’t connect to the audience and leave them feeling a little flat, even if they enjoyed it. I know it had that impact on me. Whereas this episode will always be remembered thanks to that bunny suit!
