Booty Royale: Never Go Down Without a Fight! (Volume 13) – Power Versus Technique!
What happened?
The two martial arts masters stood less than two metres apart, but it seemed like an insurmountable distance. To the untrained eye, they didn’t move. However, their previous opponents saw things very differently. They could tell that they were running through countless simulations, often five or six moves ahead. Their muscles twitched, their eyes darted, and their hearts raced. Finally, Misora stepped back and dropped to one knee. Less than a second later, Alevtina dropped to her knees too. They were exhausted from the mental preparations. However, now it was time for each of them to make their move.
Misora stepped forward, moving into an attacking range. Then, she hit Alevtina with her secret weapon, leaving her with no time to counter. At least, that’s what she thought. Alevtina ducked her head and hit Misora’s fist with her forehead. Then, she grabbed her arm and tossed Misora over her shoulder. No one gets out of that move. Well, no one but Misora. She jumped into it and was able to stop Alevtina from slamming her against the mat. They moved apart, aware that they had not given each other enough respect.
Alevtina’s next move was faster than anything Misora had encountered before. She grabbed Misora’s arm, pulling her towards her and then launched her into the air. There was no way to escape. Alevtina even held Misora’s other arm to stop her from slowing her fall. She landed on the mat with the full weight of Alevtina on top of her. It should have been over, but Misora instinctively struck Alevtina in the face with both fists. The referee stepped in and called for a medical break. That was the end of the TV broadcast. Everything after that was too much to air.
Despite their injuries, both fighters climbed to their feet and continued. This time Alevtina started by striking Misora, knocking her back and back. The audience was silent, stunned by what they saw. Even the ring announcer sat silently watching. Alevtina tried to throw Misora again, but she blocked it and then swept her standing leg away. Alevtina hit the mat, allowing Misora a chance to finish it. However, Alevtina fired her fists at Misora, striking her at the same time. Fists flew through the air, leaving the audience breathless. Then, Alevtina jumped and hit Misora with a dropkick, firing her against the cage. Misora regained her footing and took on her father’s stance. Alevtina charged, but that allowed Misora to step in and hit her in the throat with an unstoppable roundhouse. With her consciousness waning, Alevtina stood motionless in the middle of the ring. Misora couldn’t do any more. She simply waited to see what happened. Then, Alevtina fell forward, landing on top of Misora. Misora had won. Or had she?
What did you think?
The entire volume was dedicated to one fight and it was spectacular. There was a lot of padding as they included the views and opinions of the other fighters, but that just added to the tension. This was a fantastic volume and once again, this series shows that Rui Takato is a master of portraying fights. I could not stop reading no matter what happened around me. It was simply breathtaking.
Of course, Misora tried to suggest that Alevtina would have won had she put her elbow into Misora’s throat as she fell. She didn’t and it’s hard to argue with that, but Misora still didn’t want to accept the win. Either way, the two fighters hugged in the middle of the ring, grateful to have been able to fight one another. We also got to see Alevtina’s background and that was heartbreaking. Her mother was impacted by the Chernobyl disaster which left her twin sister frail and tiny when she was born whereas Alevtina continued to grow and get stronger.
This part of the story has introduced so many interesting characters that I can’t wait to see how they continue to reappear and move the story forward. I get the feeling that the next volume will be much more focused on the Gravure side of things. I’m going to miss the Valkyrie Opera, but I’m also quite excited to see what happens next.
