The second preliminary round for the Valkyrie Opera continues and it’s getting more and more brutal. Misora watches on with Iba-san, learning what she can. If she makes the final, one of these fighters will be her opponent.
Booty Royale: Never Go Down Without a Fight! (Volume 9) – Annihilation!
What happened?
The next match puts Dorothea von Schreer, the Granddaughter of IOC committee member, Franz von Schreer against Mao Mao from Myanmar. Dorothea believes that she has the edge because of her scientific approach to fighting, whereas Mao Mao is covered from head to toe with battle scars. It’ll be a quick match… or so she thinks. Mao Mao takes everything Dorothea can throw at her, and it’s a relentless assault. However, just when she thinks she’s won and closes in to finish her off, Mao Mao steps into the attack and headbutts Dorothea. Then, she headbutts her again, and again, and again, until Dorothea drops to the mat, covered in blood and short several teeth.
Diana Ionescu confidently strides towards the ring. Accompanied by disgraced former Ozeki, Doraku-Ryuu, who look like a pair of supervillains. Her opponent is Kaneko Misao, the reigning champion of the police martial arts tournament. It’s an underworld street fighter versus a police martial arts master. Could things be any more tense? Then, a figure drops into the ring, picks up Diana and slams her into the mat, knocking her out cold. This new fighter is Sigrun, a fourth-generation test-type humanoid robot with over a thousand hours of fighting experience. Misao accepts the robot’s invitation and the tournament continues without Diana. After a brief exchange of hits and throws, Sigrun forces Misao to surrender. Everyone is shocked.
The final fight of the round sees the current karate champion, Beatrice Kromkamp facing the movie star and taekwondo champion, Chae Yun-Hui. Misora watches with interest, well aware of what Chae Yun-Hui is capable of from their time together filming Iba-san’s movie. Beatrice fires a low kick, but Yun-Hui blocks it with her knee. When Beatrice steps back, she realises that her leg is broken. The fight was over. Yun-Hui recalls what Misora told her about blocks – a block isn’t defence… it’s a killer strike for destroying your opponent’s weapons.
The next round begins with Alevtina Guseva against Laila Mendez. The size difference is staggering, forcing Laila to attack and retreat. However, Alevtina needed just one chance to grab, throw, and then destroy Laila. Next is the battle between circles and straight lines as Yin XiaoMin faces Shanon Harley. Shanon does marginally better than Oshima Aki, lasting ten seconds before she realised that she didn’t stand a chance. Yin XiaoMin has now forced two fighters to quit without landing a single blow. Then there was Nosaka Nagisa versus Mao Mao. It was a relentless, bloody, and brutal affair that could have gone either way, but Mao Mao had to deploy her secret weapon to win, leaving Nagisa unconscious on her feet. Finally, Chae Yun-Hui took on Sigrun, attacking with a flurry of attacks. However, she too was no match for the robot. And that’s the full lineup for the Aria of the Valkyrie Opera confirmed.
What did you think?
We didn’t see much of Misora in this volume at all, which is a shame. However, the fights were so insane that it felt like no time had passed. They’re getting more brutal too. Mao Mao is looking like a seriously dangerous fighter and it’s impossible to ignore Sigrun, although the idea of a robot fighting is a bit out there. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens next. I wonder if Yin XiaoMin will actually get to fight, although I do love the way she’s basically terrified her opponents into submitting by showing them a couple of steps and holds. It reminds me of samurai battles where they run through the outcomes of the fight in their mind and then realise that they cannot win and accept their defeat without making a single move. It might seem cowardly, but it’s better to walk away than end up in the dirt.
There were a lot of surprises too given who we’ve met before and how it made out like something was going to come of them fighting Misora at some point. I didn’t think Laila Mendez or Chae Yun-Hui were going to lose. I didn’t think Nagisa would advance because then she may be in a position to fight Misora. She certainly did herself proud though. I think we’ll be able to take a bit of a break from the tournament in the next volume so that we can see how the fighters prepare for the main event. Of course, I do worry that things will get infinitely darker once more. I mean we haven’t seen that scumbag doctor in a while. Hopefully, he never comes back, but I doubt that’ll be the case. We need much more Misora too and more of her and Akira. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
