Gleipnir (Volume 9) – He Needs to Suffer for Far Longer!
What happened?
After contacting Elena, Chihiro continued to investigate the memories she gained from the time she and Shuichi merged. That drew the attention of Honoka and now it’s just a matter of time before she disappears like countless others. Shuichi is determined to stop that from happening and since Chihiro can remember what happened when they merged, he thinks that might be the best way to move forward. She’s concerned that Honoka would become aware of him and then he’d be in danger too. He dismisses her concerns. He’s not going to let her die without doing anything to stop it.
However, Clair doesn’t like the idea of Shuichi letting Chihiro climb inside him once more, and not just because of the chance that Honoka will take notice. She asks someone else to see if they can access his memories. Maybe another coin user can do it. She asked Sayoka and Miku but they refused. Isao agreed much to Shuichi’s disappointment. He stripped down and climbed inside, but the compatibility wasn’t good. It had to be Chihiro. Once inside, she revealed that her body remembers how to force the transformation to occur. Clair is stunned. They have become a single person and they are incredibly strong. Why can’t she do that with him?
Shuichi and Chihiro navigate his memories. He sees the cram school and his old friends there. He recognises Elena and Kaito, but the others are still a mystery. They skip forward in time and discover that Kaito killed Honoka thinking she killed Aiko and took her life as her own. However, Aiko committed suicide and Honoka didn’t want anyone to miss Aiko. Elena and Shuichi found a coin and transformed Shuichi’s body so that they could fight as one. They tracked down Kaito and were about to kill him when Honoka stopped them. She said that Kaito couldn’t die yet as he hadn’t suffered enough for what he did. The thing was Honoka wasn’t talking to Shuichi and Elena in the memory. She was talking to Shuichi and Chihiro directly.

What did you think?
Incredible! This book alone surpassed anything the anime did. I loved how we saw Clair getting jealous of Chihiro as that tells us so much more about her character. We know that she likes Shuichi and doesn’t want to share him with anyone, but there’s more than just that. The fact that she is Elena’s half-sister will no doubt have some significance possibly making her also Aiko’s half-sister too… or Honoka’s. Maybe even Kaito’s! That’s an amazing development. I loved the way the memories were presented with current-time Shuichi drifting through the space. Seeing Honoka erase a group of people in one go was insane. However, nothing compares to the moment that she spoke to Shuichi in the present from his memories.
Stuff like that always gives me chills. I remember something similar happening in Summer Time Rendering and that still makes my skin crawl when I think about it. The idea that something could get to you in such a safe space is a great way to up the tension. Of course, what Honoka said is vitally important too. She saved Kaito because he hadn’t suffered enough. The alien is absolutely behind this. He’s angry that Honoka was killed and he’s ready to destroy the world to make Kaito suffer. My guess is that this ends with the alien and not Kaito’s death. This series is just getting better and better.
