Gleipnir (Volume 12) – I’ll Make It All Go Away!
What happened?
One of Subaru’s skills makes it so that he can find the location of anyone he’s ever seen in his life. He chose that so that he could find his parents who he hadn’t seen since he was a baby. Well, that turned out to be an awful skill since he learned they had separated and each had a new family. At least, he can use it to find Honoka after he saw her when Naoto fought Kaito. However, before getting to Honoka, they ran into one of her copies. Hanabi was keen to show what she was capable of by destroying it. Unfortunately, the copies are also incredibly strong. It took one of Naoto and Hanabi’s arms when they attacked and then pounded Subaru’s monster into oblivion.
They were only saved because of Naoto and Hanabi’s fusion when they got on the same wavelength about Aiko’s death. Hanabi took the fight to the Honoka copy using her collection of heads on chains. She pinned it with their jaws and was ready when it tried to fight its way out. Hanabi pounded it to the ground and then finished it off. She passed out soon after, but at least they survived. However, this clarified what they were facing and since they were all pretty beat up, Subaru tried to warn them that if they went after Honoka, they would all die. Elena came up with a plan to remove Honoka from the copies so that they could fight her alone. It was a crazy idea, but it was their only hope.
Using Sakuma’s powers, they were able to grab Honoka with his chains and drag her back to their location. However, she came with a wave of monsters who all came crashing down to the ground. Elena faired best from the initial attack and then took the fight to Honoka, however, she didn’t seem to stand a chance. After Hanabi and Naoto bought her some time, she was able to grab Honoka’s wrist. She revealed that she had the power to make people forget not so that she could erase Shuichi and Clair’s memories but to erase Honoka’s memories. Since she was born of people’s memories, it would certainly kill her. It appeared to be working until Elena stopped to save Subaru. Honoka was not about to give her another chance and closed in for the kill. At the last second, Clair and Shuichi arrived, ready to take the fight into another round!

What did you think?
I feel a little bit better about the direction the story is going after the last volume showed us what would have been a good ending but then continued. It looked like Honoka died when Kaito died, but we didn’t see enough to know for sure. So, the idea that Honoka was not dependent on Kaito’s powers is fine. The fight against the Honoka copy was good, although I was a little underwhelmed with Hanabi at first. All that talk and she lost an arm with her first attack. She’s lucky that the fusion restores her body after they end it and the fact that the fusion turns her into an absolute monster.
There are quite a few things about Hanabi that remind me of Clair, including her looks. I wonder if we won’t find out that she’s related to Clair. We know that her father had an affair and I’m guessing that has something to do with the bullying Aiko received that ended with her taking her own life. There are a few things yet to be straightened out and with only two volumes to go I think it’s going to go down to the last page. I think the next volume will likely be taken up fighting Honoka and then the final volume will tie everything up and likely involve the alien’s final act. This should be exciting!
